History
The princely state of Sailana, situated in the westernmost hills of the Malwa plateau (modern-day Ratlam district of Madhya Pradesh), is an important first-class Rathore Rajput principality. Born o ut of a fierce 18th-century dynastic split within its senior sister state of Ratlam, Sailana’s history is a compelling narrative of survival against Maratha expansion, elite martial traditions, and a distinct 20th-century legacy of world-class culinary art and progressive administration.
The Foundation and the Fierce Royal Split (1736)
The establishment of Sailana is directly rooted in the complex, internal successions of the senior royal house of Ratlam. The state was founded in 1736 by Raja Jai Singh Rathore, a great-grandson of the legendary Raja Ratan Singh (the founder of Ratlam who fell at the Battle of Dharmat).
- The Succession Crisis: Following the death of his father, Raja Keshav Das of Ratlam, a chaotic succession struggle tore the Rathore court apart. Jai Singh, an exceptionally ambitious and militarily gifted prince, refused to accept a diminished role under rival claimants.
- The Midnight Escape: In 1716, Jai Singh orchestrated a daring military coup, killing his rival uncle to temporarily seize the Ratlam throne. However, faced with an overwhelming counter-offensive backed by imperial forces, Jai Singh withdrew to the rugged, naturally fortified hills of the western Malwa frontier.
- Establishing Sailana: For two decades, Jai Singh operated from temporary strongholds, subduing local tribal chieftains. In 1736, he permanently consolidated his territory and laid the foundations of his new capital, naming it Sailana (derived from Shaila-ana, meaning "at the foot of the hills"). Despite the bitter separation, Sailana maintained an elite political standing, second only to Ratlam among the Malwa Rathore houses.
The Maratha Storm and the British Guarantee (1819)
Like its neighboring principalities, Sailana faced near-extinction during the mid-to-late 18th century as the Mughal Empire crumbled and the expansionist Maratha Confederacy swept across Central India.
- The Scindia Aggression: Sailana was repeatedly invaded by the armies of the Scindia dynasty of Gwalior. To protect his borders and prevent absolute annexation, the Raja of Sailana was forced to sign away vast tracts of agricultural lands and submit to a crushing, regular military tribute (tanka).
- The 1819 Settlement: Exhausted by decades of Maratha extortion, Raja Lachhman Singh sought the protection of the British East India Company following the conclusion of the Third Anglo-Maratha War. In 1819, under the direct diplomatic mediation of Sir John Malcolm, a formal treaty was signed. The British legally guaranteed Sailana’s internal sovereignty and fixed its annual tribute to Gwalior, routing it strictly through British channels to eliminate direct Maratha incursions. Under this colonial arrangement, Sailana was recognized as an independent 11-gun salute state within the Central India Agency.
The Era of Enlightenment: Raja Sir Dilip Singh (1919–1947)
Sailana entered its absolute golden age of modernization and international renown under its highly celebrated 20th-century ruler, Raja Sir Dilip Singh (r. 1919–1961).
- Administrative Marvel: Educated under modern principles, Raja Dilip Singh was an exceptionally progressive administrator. He implemented free and compulsory primary education, built advanced medical dispensaries, modernized the local agrarian economy, and became one of the first rulers in Central India to introduce a fully functioning, elected local municipal government (Panchayat) system to give his subjects a voice.
- The Legendary Royal Kitchens: Beyond his statecraft, Raja Dilip Singh was globally renowned as one of the greatest culinary authorities in Indian history. A passionate gourmet, he spent decades collecting, translating, and preserving rare medieval Sanskrit, Persian, and Urdu culinary manuscripts from royal courts across the subcontinent. His extensive research culminated in the legendary cookbook "Sailana Shahi Pakwan" (The Imperial Feast of Sailana), making the Sailana court a legendary pilgrimage site for international dignitaries, viceroys, and fellow Maharajas seeking unparalleled gourmet experiences.
Vexillology and Heraldic Symbols
- The State Flag: Reflecting their elite desert ancestry, the flag of Sailana State was a traditional rectangular saffron (amaranthe) banner, the sacred and universal color of the Rathore clan, symbolizing sun-born heritage, martial valor, and spiritual protection.
- The Coat of Arms: The official heraldic shield of Sailana featured a central fortress flanked by two majestic royal falcons acting as supporters—a deep sacred nod to the goddess Karni Mata, the divine protector of the Rathore lineage. The state motto proudly emphasized strength born out of righteousness and defensive resilience.
Accession to Independent India
Following the end of British paramountcy in August 1947, the last ruling monarch, Raja Sir Dilip Singh, signed the Instrument of Accession to join the Union of India, effectively concluding over two centuries of sovereign Rathore hill rule.
In June 1948, Sailana formally merged into the newly created state union of Madhya Bharat. Following the systemic reorganization of Indian states along linguistic lines in 1956, Madhya Bharat was dissolved, and the historic lands of Sailana were permanently integrated as a vital subdivision, municipality, and historic sanctuary within the Ratlam district of Madhya Pradesh.
