History

Origin and Foundation of Bera Jagir

The history of Bera Jagir is deeply intertwined with the royal houses of Mewar (Udaipur) and Marwar (Jodhpur). The estate was established when it was granted to Kunwar Shekha Ji Ranawat, a son of the legendary Rajput warrior-king Maharana Pratap. Kunwar Shekha's mother, Rani Phool Kanwar, was the granddaughter of Rao Maldeo of Marwar, representing a powerful matrimonial and political alliance between the two premier states of Rajputana.

Because Bera was situated on the rugged borderlands between the Mewar and Marwar regions, it occupied a position of strategic importance. The Ranawat sub-clan (a branch of the Sisodia dynasty descended from the Maharanas of Mewar) ruled the jagir, defending its borders and maintaining a delicate balance of relations with both the Maharana of Udaipur and the Maharaja of Jodhpur.

The Feudal Era and Administrative Integration

Throughout the Mughal and Maratha periods, the rulers of Bera maintained their autonomy through martial prowess and strategic local alliances. Despite their Sisodia lineage, the geographical location of Bera in the Godwar region eventually led to its closer administrative integration into the princely state of Jodhpur (Marwar). During the British Raj, the Thakur of Bera was recognized as a prominent noble of the Jodhpur State, holding administrative and revenue-collecting authority over the local villages.

Post-Independence and the Modern Era

Following India's independence in 1947 and the subsequent abolition of the jagirdari system, the ruling family of Bera transitioned from feudal administrators to custodians of the region's rich cultural and natural heritage.

In the modern era, Bera has gained international renown not only for its historical legacy but also for its unique ecological landscape. Situated in the Pali district of Rajasthan, the region surrounding Bera and the nearby Jawai Dam is celebrated globally as "Leopard Country." Here, a unique and harmonious coexistence has flourished between the wild leopards and the local Rabari pastoralists. The descendants of the Bera royal family have successfully transitioned into heritage hospitality, pioneering eco-tourism and wildlife conservation initiatives that protect the region's historic legacy and natural biodiversity.
