History
Origin and Foundation of Rajkot State (c. 1620)
The princely state of Rajkot was founded around 1620 by Thakur Saheb Vibhaji Ajoji, a prominent scion of the Jadeja Rajput dynasty. Vibhaji Ajoji was the grandson of Jam Sataji (Satarasal) of Nawanagar (now Jamnagar). Following the tragic death of his father, Kunwar Ajoji, in the historic Battle of Bhuchar Mori in 1591, Vibhaji Ajoji was granted the territories of Sardhar and Rajkot as his personal estate (appanage). He established his administrative headquarters at Rajkot, laying the foundation of a sovereign state that would grow to play a crucial role in the geopolitics of the Kathiawar peninsula.
The Mughal Conquest and the Masumabad Period (1720–1732)
The state went through a turbulent period in the early 18th century. In 1720, Masum Khan, a deputy Faujdar representing the declining Mughal Empire in Gujarat, launched an invasion of Rajkot. He successfully seized control of the province, expelling the ruling Rajput chief, Thakore Saheb Mehramanji II. Masum Khan renamed the capital town "Masumabad" and constructed a defensive wall around the city to fortify it against external attacks.
The Mughal rule over Rajkot was short-lived. In 1732, Thakore Saheb Ranmalji I, the son and successor of Mehramanji II, launched a counter-offensive with the strategic military assistance of allied Maratha forces and local clans. Ranmalji I successfully recaptured Rajkot, banished the Mughal administrators, and restored the ancestral Jadeja Rajput rule. The town’s original name, Rajkot, was reinstated, and the newly built fortifications were repurposed to defend the capital against future external invasions.
The British Era and the Kathiawar Agency
At the turn of the 19th century, Rajkot, along with other princely states of Saurashtra, entered into treaty relations with the British East India Company. In 1807, under the diplomatic mediation of Colonel Alexander Walker, the state signed the Walker Treaty, which established a British protectorate over the region. This treaty effectively brought an end to centuries of internal tributary warfare and Maratha tax-raids (mulkgiri).
In 1822, Rajkot was selected by the British authorities as the political headquarters of the Kathiawar Agency. A large tract of land on the banks of the Aji River was leased from the Thakore Saheb to build a British Cantonment and civil station. This move transformed Rajkot into the primary diplomatic, educational, and administrative center of the Saurashtra region. The town became home to the British Political Agent, who oversaw relations with over two hundred small and large princely states across Kathiawar.
Era of Modernization and Key Reformers
Rajkot was exceptionally fortunate to be governed by a series of highly progressive and reform-minded rulers during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Their visionary policies placed Rajkot at the vanguard of education and social reform in western India:
- Thakore Saheb Bawajiraj Sinhji (reigned 1862–1890): A ruler of great intellect, he actively collaborated with British administrators to introduce modern infrastructure. Under his rule, Rajkumar College, Rajkot was established in 1870. This institution was modeled after English public schools and was designed to provide a modern, liberal education to the heirs of India's princely houses.
- Thakore Saheb Sir Lakhajiraj Sinhji III (reigned 1907–1930): Widely regarded as the architect of modern Rajkot, Lakhajiraj III was an enlightened, democratic ruler. In 1923, he took the revolutionary step of establishing the Rajkot Praja Pratinidhi Sabha (People's Representative Assembly), which gave citizens a voice in the state's legislative and fiscal affairs. He was a champion of female education, founded the Rajkot State Bank to boost local trade, and promoted indigenous industries (Swadeshi).
Rajkot State also holds a monumental place in the history of India's freedom struggle. Karamchand Gandhi, the father of Mahatma Gandhi, served as the Dewan (Prime Minister) of Rajkot State. Mahatma Gandhi spent his childhood years in the city, attending Alfred High School. In 1939, the city became the center of the famous "Rajkot Satyagraha," led by Mahatma Gandhi and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, demanding greater political representation and democratic reforms for the state's residents.
Post-Independence Integration and Modern Era
Following India’s independence from British rule, the last ruling prince of Rajkot, Thakore Saheb Pradyumansinhji, signed the Instrument of Accession to the Dominion of India on 15 February 1948. Rajkot State was integrated into the newly created United State of Kathiawar (later renamed Saurashtra State), with Rajkot serving as its initial capital.
In 1956, under the States Reorganisation Act, Saurashtra was merged into the Bombay State. Following the linguistic bifurcation of Bombay State in 1960, Rajkot became a part of the newly created state of Gujarat. Today, Rajkot is the fourth-largest metropolitan city in Gujarat, celebrated as an industrial hub for machine tools, engineering, and gold jewelry, while preserving its rich Rajput heritage and historical legacy.
