History
Origin and Foundation of the Dynasty
The ruling dynasty of Lunawada belonged to the Solanki clan of Rajputs, claiming direct patrilineal descent from the historic Chaulukya (Solanki) dynasty of Anhilwara Patan. The lineage traces back to the legendary Emperor Sidhraj Jaisinh, one of the most celebrated monarchs of medieval Gujarat. Following the decline of the central Solanki power in Patan, a branch of the family migrated southward.
In 1225, the ancestors of the Lunawada house established their sovereign authority at Virpur, situated near the banks of the Mahi River. The rulers during this period were commonly referred to as the "Virpura Solankis," a title that remained associated with the clan for centuries. They maintained their stronghold at Virpur for over two centuries, defending their territory against surrounding local chieftains and consolidating their regional influence.
Establishment of Lunawada (1434)
By the early 15th century, geopolitical pressures and strategic considerations prompted the clan to seek a more secure defensive location. In 1434, Rana Bhimsinghji crossed the Mahi River and shifted the capital to a new site, laying the foundation of the town of Lunawada.
According to local legend, the town was established on the advice of a sadhu (ascetic) and was named after the ancient shrine of Luneshwar Mahadev, a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva that still stands as a major religious site in the region. Another popular narrative attributes the name to Sage Lomas, who was believed to have meditated in the nearby hills. The strategic positioning of Lunawada, surrounded by dense forests and rugged hills, provided the Solankis with an excellent natural defense against the expansionist designs of the Gujarat Sultanate.
Mughal and Maratha Periods
During the Mughal era, Lunawada managed to retain its autonomy by paying a nominal tribute (peshkash) to the imperial governors at Ahmedabad. However, with the decline of the Mughal Empire in the early 18th century, the region became a battleground for Maratha expansion.
The state fell under the dual sphere of influence of the Peshwa and the Gaekwad of Baroda. Eventually, the Scindia of Gwalior also asserted suzerainty over Lunawada, demanding annual tribute. This complex tributary arrangement drained the state's treasury, forcing the Maharanas to continuously negotiate with multiple Maratha factions to preserve their political existence.
The British Period and Administrative Reforms
The chaotic Maratha interventions ended with the expansion of British influence in Western India. In 1812, the British East India Company guaranteed the protection of Lunawada from external aggressors through a series of settlements.
A defining moment in the state’s modern history occurred in 1861, when the Scindia of Gwalior formally transferred their tributary rights over Lunawada to the British Crown. Following this transition, Lunawada was classified as a Second Class state within the Rewa Kantha Agency under the Bombay Presidency. The British recognized the ruler’s local authority with a permanent 9-gun salute.
The late 19th century was marked by significant modernization and governance reforms under the enlightened rule of Maharana Sir Wakhatsinghji (who ruled from 1867 to 1929). Knighted as a Knight Commander of the Indian Empire (KCIE), Maharana Wakhatsinghji was a visionary reformer. He introduced:
- Judicial and Land Reforms: Codified local laws and introduced structured land revenue assessments.
- Education and Health: Established the state's first English-medium schools, primary schools for girls, and free public dispensaries.
- Infrastructure Development: Constructed public offices, metalled roads connecting Lunawada to neighboring districts, and municipal waterworks.
Post-Independence and Modern Era
Following India's independence in August 1947, the last ruler of the state, Maharana Virbhadrasinghji, signed the Instrument of Accession to the Dominion of India. On June 10, 1948, the state was formally merged into the Indian Union, initially becoming part of the Bombay State.
With the linguistic reorganization of Indian states in 1960, Lunawada became a part of the Panchmahal district in the newly formed state of Gujarat. In 2013, recognizing the historical and administrative significance of the town, the Government of Gujarat declared Lunawada as the official administrative headquarters of the newly created Mahisagar District. Today, the town remains a vibrant cultural and commercial hub, preserving its rich Solanki heritage through its historical temples, stepwells, and palaces.
