History
Origin and Lineage of Kaneri Thikana
The historic Thikana of Kaneri, situated in the Malwa region of Central India, holds an esteemed position within the annals of the Rathore dynasty. Initially ruled by the Prithvirajot clan of Rathores, the estate's governance transitioned during a critical juncture in the early 20th century. The Rathore rulers of this region trace their lineage back to the illustrious Royal House of Marwar (Jodhpur), which later branched out to establish the princely states of Ratlam, Sitamau, and Sailana State on the Malwa plateau.
The Transition of 1906 and the Ratansinghot Succession
A pivotal moment in the history of Kaneri occurred in 1906 following the demise of the last Prithvirajot ruler, Thakur Sahib Moti Singh, who passed away without leaving a direct male heir to succeed him. Under the traditional Rajput custom of resumption and re-grant, the estate temporarily reverted to the parent state of Sailana.
In 1909, His Highness Raj Rajeshwar Rashtravar-Kulabhushana Shreeman Raja Sir Jaswant Singh II, the progressive and highly respected ruler of Sailana, granted the vacant Jagir of Kaneri to his younger son, Rajkumar Ramchandra Singh Sahib. This grand investiture marked the transition of Kaneri's leadership to the Ratansinghot branch of the Rathores, establishing a direct dynastic and familial link with the ruling house of Sailana.
Court Privileges and Ceremonial Honors
As one of the premier, first-class jagirs of Sailana, Kaneri enjoyed exceptional status within the princely state's administrative and social hierarchy. The Tazimi Sirdars (noble lords) of Kaneri were accorded rare ceremonial distinctions that reflected their proximity to the royal throne:
- Dohri-Tazim: Upon attending the royal Darbar, the Thakur of Kaneri was received with "Dohri-Tazim" (double Tazim), where the ruling Maharaja would rise from his seat both upon the noble's arrival and departure.
- Gold Anklets: The holders of the Kaneri Jagir were specifically permitted the rare privilege of wearing gold anklets (Kadi) in the presence of the sovereign, a mark of high royal favor.
- Royal Insignia (Birud): The Thikana was entitled to display grand insignia of state, including the Abdagiri (royal parasol), Danka (state kettledrum), Nishan (heraldic flag), Chhari (ceremonial mace), and Ghari (state clock/gong).
- Royal Installation: Unlike minor fiefdoms, the succession of the Thakur of Kaneri was personally solemnized and installed by the Ruler of Sailana himself through the traditional ceremony of Talwar Bandhai (girding of the sword).
The British Era and Modern Transition
During the British Raj, Sailana and its subordinate thikanas like Kaneri functioned under the political oversight of the Malwa Agency, a division of the Central India Agency. The Thikana maintained its internal administrative autonomy, collecting land revenues and dispensing local justice in alignment with the progressive administrative reforms introduced by Raja Sir Jaswant Singh II and his successor, Raja Dileep Singh.
Following India's independence in 1947, the princely state of Sailana merged into the United State of Gwalior, Indore, and Malwa (later known as Madhya Bharat) in 1948, which subsequently integrated into the state of Madhya Pradesh in 1956. With the abolition of the Jagirdari system and the passing of the Zamindari Abolition acts, the administrative and revenue-collecting powers of the Kaneri Thikana ceased. Today, the descendants of this noble house preserve their rich cultural heritage, ancestral properties, and historical legacies within the modern democratic fabric of India.
