History

Origin and Foundation of Sonepur State

The historical origin of Sonepur State (historically known as Subarnapur) is deeply intertwined with the expansion of the Chauhan Rajput dynasty in Western Odisha. Prior to the mid-17th century, Sonepur was governed by the Bhanja dynasty of Boudh. Recognizing its strategic, agricultural, and cultural significance, Maharaja Madhukar Deo, the fourth Chauhan ruler of Sambalpur, launched a campaign that culminated in the annexation of the territory. Around 1649 CE, he bequeathed the newly conquered province to his younger son, Maharaja Madan Gopal Singh Chauhan, who laid the foundation of the independent Chauhan state of Sonepur.

Under Maharaja Madan Gopal, Sonepur transformed from a minor chiefdom into a highly organized and fortified kingdom. The Chauhan rulers maintained a strong military presence to defend their borders from neighboring rival kingdoms. They were also staunch patrons of Vedic culture and local traditions, striking a harmonious balance between orthodox Hindu practices and local tribal traditions, which cemented their legitimacy and popular support.

The Maratha Influence and British Paramountcy

In the late 18th century, the expansion of the Bhonsle Marathas of Nagpur altered the political landscape of Odisha. Sonepur, alongside neighboring Patna and Sambalpur, was forced to pay heavy tribute to the Marathas, significantly straining the state's treasury. The Maratha occupation disrupted local governance and led to periods of economic hardship for the region.

This dynamic shifted following the Second Anglo-Maratha War and the signing of the Treaty of Deogaon in 1803. The British East India Company assumed control over the region, briefly restoring Sonepur to the Marathas before establishing permanent British paramountcy over the state in 1826. Sonepur was subsequently classified as a princely state under the Central Provinces. During the Indian Rebellion of 1857, the ruling chief, Maharaja Niladhar Singh Deo, provided critical logistical support to the British in maintaining law and order, for which he was rewarded with the hereditary title of Raja Bahadur.

The Golden Era of Administration and Reforms

The administration of Sonepur entered its golden age during the reign of Maharaja Sir Bir Mitrodaya Singh Deo KCIE (who ruled from 1902 to 1937). Highly educated, progressive, and deeply committed to welfare, he initiated major administrative, judicial, and social reforms:

  • Judicial Modernization: He modernized the state's legal framework by introducing codified laws, establishing structured civil and criminal courts, and separating the judiciary from the executive.
  • Education and Literature: As a great patron of letters, the Maharaja funded numerous schools, provided scholarships, and supported scholars of Sanskrit and Odia. He authored several books on religion, governance, and history.
  • Agricultural and Infrastructure Growth: He commissioned major irrigation projects, excavated public water tanks, constructed modern roadways, and built grand palaces and public dispensaries.

In recognition of his stellar administration and support to the British Crown, he was granted the hereditary title of Maharaja in 1921.

Post-Independence Integration and Modern Era

With the departure of the British in 1947, Sonepur State's last ruler, Maharaja Sudhansu Shekhar Singh Deo, signed the Instrument of Accession, merging the princely state with the Dominion of India. On 1 January 1948, Sonepur formally integrated into the province of Odisha.

Initially, the territory of Sonepur was merged with the Bolangir district. However, recognizing its distinct cultural heritage and administrative needs, it was carved out as a separate district on 23 March 1993, officially named Subarnapur District. Today, Subarnapur is celebrated as the "Second Varanasi of India" due to its numerous historic temples, including the Subarnameru, Lankeswari, and Sureswari temples. The region also enjoys global renown for its exquisite handloom textiles, especially the Sonepuri Sambalpuri sarees, which continue to preserve the historic artistic genius of the Chauhan era.
