History
Ancient and Mythological Roots
Idar’s history stretches deep into antiquity, with its fortress-hill, Idargadh, mentioned in the Mahabharata and Puranas under the ancient name Ilvadurg.
According to local lore, the region was originally ruled by Bhil chieftains. The transition from tribal rule to Rajput hegemony began around the 6th century CE when Guhaditya (Guha), the progenitor of the illustrious Gehlot/Guhilot clan (who would later establish the mighty kingdom of Mewar/Udaipur), was born in the caves of Idar and raised by a local Bhil chief. Guha eventually took control of the region, establishing the early foundations of Rajput rule before his descendants moved deeper into Rajasthan.
For the next several centuries, control of Idar oscillated between the local Bhils, the Parmars, the Parihars, and later the Solanki Rajputs of Anhilwara Patan.
The Modern Rathore Foundation (1728)
The modern, definitive chapter of Idar State began in 1728 during the chaotic decline of the Mughal Empire. The state was established by two adventurous Rathore brothers: Anand Singh and Rai Singh.
- The Jodhpur Connection: Anand Singh and Rai Singh were the younger sons of Maharaja Ajit Singh of Marwar (Jodhpur). Seeking to carve out their own independent territory outside of Rajasthan, they marched into Gujarat with a dedicated force of Rathore clansmen.
- Consolidation: They successfully captured the strategic fortress-town of Idar and its surrounding territories. Despite facing brutal, relentless counter-offensives from the Marathas—specifically the Peshwa's forces and the Gaekwads of Baroda—the Rathores of Idar held their ground, cementing the state as a major sovereign Rajput principality in Gujarat.
The British Treaty and Internal Sub-States
By the early 19th century, weary of devastating Maratha raids and internal succession disputes, Idar sought stability under the British umbrella.
- The 1812 Alliance: In 1812, Idar entered into a treaty with the British East India Company, becoming a part of the Mahi Kantha Agency.
- The Pattawat System: Idar was unique for its complex internal feudal structure. The Maharaja's territory was flanked by powerful, semi-independent noble estates known as Pattas (such as Ahmadnagar, Morasa, and Baad). This frequently led to internal power struggles between the ruling Maharaja and his fiercely autonomous nobles, who required British mediation to keep the peace.
The Era of Sir Pratap Singh (1902–1911)
Idar’s international prominence peaked at the turn of the 20th century under one of the most legendary figures of colonial India: Maharaja Sir Pratap Singh (popularly known as Sir P.).
- The Stint in Idar: Sir Pratap Singh, a younger son of the Jodhpur royal family, had served brilliantly as the Regent of Jodhpur. In 1902, due to a lack of direct heirs in Idar, he was called upon to ascend the throne of Idar.
- Modernization: During his brief but highly impactful nine-year reign, Sir Pratap transformed the state. He modernized the administration, laid down new revenue systems, built roads, and shifted the capital from the cramped valley of Idar to the newly planned city of Himmatnagar (named after his successor, Himmat Singh).
- Return to Jodhpur: In 1911, Sir Pratap abdicated the throne of Idar to return to Jodhpur to serve as regent for his young grand-nephew, leaving Idar under the capable rule of his adopted son, Maharaja Himmat Singh.
Heraldry and State Symbols
- The State Flag: The flag of Idar was a striking Panchranga (five-colored banner), a traditional symbol of its proud Rajput heritage, featuring horizontal stripes of red, yellow, white, green, and blue.
- The Coat of Arms: Idar’s official heraldic achievement featured a shield supported by two leopards. The crest displayed a horseman carrying a lance, symbolizing the state's legendary cavalry traditions. The state motto inscribed below was: "Maharajadhiraj Shri Idar Narendra" (The Great King, Lord of Idar).
Accession to India
Following India's independence in 1947, Maharaja Himmat Singh signed the Instrument of Accession, bringing an end to over two centuries of sovereign Rathore rule. On June 10, 1948, Idar formally integrated into the western Indian state of Bombay. When Bombay was later partitioned on linguistic lines in 1960, the historical territories of Idar became a permanent part of the modern state of Gujarat.
