History

The Princely State of Banswara, located in the rugged Vagad region of southern Rajputana (now Rajasthan), was an important salute state ruled by the Aharya or Sisodia clan of Rajputs. Known historically as the "Country of the Hundred Islands" due to the numerous islands on the Mahi River, Banswara carved out a distinct identity through centuries of conflict, territorial division, and strategic diplomacy.

Origins and Clan Division (1527)

The history of Banswara is inextricably linked to the neighboring state of Dungarpur. Originally, the entire Vagad region was ruled as a single entity by the descendants of Samant Singh, a prince of the royal house of Mewar (Udaipur). In the early sixteenth century, Maharawal Udai Singh of Vagad fought valiantly and died alongside Rana Sanga at the historic Battle of Khanwa in 1527 against Babur. Before his death, Udai Singh decreed that his territory be divided between his two sons to prevent fraternal conflict. His elder son, Prithvi Raj, inherited the western portion (Dungarpur), while his younger son, Jagmal Singh, became the founder and first ruler of Banswara.

Territorial Consolidation and Conflict

Maharawal Jagmal Singh initially established his capital in the dense forests, gradually subduing the local Bhil chieftains who inhabited the region. Legend dictates that the town of Banswara was named after a Bhil chieftain named Bansna, whom Jagmal defeated, though it is also attributed to the vast bamboo (bans) groves in the area. For the next two centuries, the rulers of Banswara defended their territory against frequent incursions from both the neighboring state of Dungarpur and the powerful Sultans of Malwa and Gujarat, maintaining a fragile autonomy through military resilience.

Mughal Suzerainty and Maratha Invasions

During the reign of Emperor Akbar, Banswara, like most Rajput states, acknowledged Mughal suzerainty while retaining internal administrative control. This arrangement provided relative stability until the decline of the Mughal Empire in the early eighteenth century. The subsequent political vacuum exposed Banswara to devastating raids by the Marathas. The state was forced to pay heavy tributes (Chauth) to the Maratha Scindia and Holkar dynasties, which severely depleted the state treasury and plunged the region into economic distress and lawlessness.

The British Treaty of 1818

To escape the oppressive exactions of the Marathas and internal rebellion from turbulent feudal barons (Thakurs), Maharawal Umed Singh turned to the British East India Company. On December 25, 1818, Banswara signed a treaty of defensive alliance and protection with the British. Under the terms of this treaty, British paramountcy was established, external aggression was suppressed, and the state's financial obligations were regulated. This marked the beginning of a long period of internal peace, enabling successive rulers to build palaces, establish schools, and formalize legal systems.

Modernization and the Bhil Uprising (Late 19th to Early 20th Century)

The late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries saw significant administrative shifts under rulers like Maharawal Lachhman Singh and Maharawal Prithvi Singh. However, social unrest emerged within the indigenous Bhil population, who faced economic hardships. In 1913, the social reformer Govind Giri led a massive socio-religious movement among the Bhils, culminating in a gathering at Mangarh Hill on the border of Banswara and Santrampur. Fearing a rebellion, the combined forces of the British and the princely states surrounded the hill and opened fire, resulting in the Mangarh Hill massacre, a tragic event often referred to as the "Adivasi Jallianwala Bagh."

Accession and the Integration into India

The last ruling monarch of Banswara was Maharawal Chandra Veer Singh. Following the end of British rule in August 1947, the Maharawal signed the Instrument of Accession to merge his state into the Dominion of India. Legend records that upon signing the document, he poignantly remarked, "I am signing the death warrant of my state." In March 1948, Banswara initially joined the United State of Rajasthan as part of the early phases of integration, which was completely consolidated into the modern state of Rajasthan in 1949.
