History
Origin and Foundation of Gondal State
The princely state of Gondal, situated in the Kathiawar peninsula of Gujarat, was established in 1634 by Thakore Shri Kumbhoji I Meramanji. The ruling dynasty of Gondal belonged to the Jadeja clan of Rajputs, who trace their ancestry back to the ancient Yadav dynasty. Thakore Shri Kumbhoji I was granted the estate of Ardoi and several adjoining villages by his father, Meramanji I of Rajkot. Through strategic alliances and military prowess, Kumbhoji I consolidated his territory and shifted his capital to Gondal, laying the foundation of a state that would later become a model of progressive governance in Western India.
Expansion and the Maratha Era
Under the dynamic leadership of Thakore Shri Kumbhoji II (who ruled from 1753 to 1790), Gondal experienced significant territorial expansion. Kumbhoji II was a brilliant military strategist and diplomat. He acquired the prosperous towns of Dhoraji, Upleta, and Bhayavadar from the Nawab of Junagadh, which substantially increased the state's agricultural and trade revenues. During this period, Kathiawar was marked by the shifting power dynamics between the Mughal governors, the Peshwas of Pune, and the Gaekwads of Baroda. Kumbhoji II navigated these turbulent political waters with great skill, securing his borders and cementing Gondal as a formidable military power in the region.
British Suzerainty and Elevation to First-Class Status
In 1807, during the reign of Thakore Shri Muluji Sagramji, Gondal came under the protection of the British East India Company following the settlement negotiated by Colonel Alexander Walker. This settlement brought stability to the war-torn Kathiawar region. Initially classified as a Second Class State within the Kathiawar Agency, Gondal was highly regarded for its administrative discipline.
Owing to its exemplary governance, financial stability, and the growing modernization under its rulers, the status of the state was officially raised from a Second Class to a First Class State in 1887 during the Golden Jubilee celebrations of Queen Victoria. This elevated status granted the ruler a 9-gun salute and expanded judicial powers, positioning Gondal among the premier states of Gujarat.
The Golden Age of Reform: Maharaja Sir Bhagvatsinhji
The history of Gondal reached its zenith during the reign of Maharaja Sir Bhagvatsinhji GCSI, GCIE (ruled 1869–1944). Assuming full ruling powers in 1884, Bhagvatsinhji emerged as one of India's most visionary, reformist, and enlightened rulers. He holds the unique distinction of being a medical graduate, having earned his medical degree (M.D.) from the University of Edinburgh.
Maharaja Bhagvatsinhji introduced groundbreaking socio-economic reforms that transformed Gondal into a model princely state:
- Education: Gondal was the first state in India to introduce free and compulsory primary education for both boys and girls. To promote female literacy, the Maharaja made education for girls compulsory up to the age of eleven, a revolutionary step for that era.
- Taxation and Economy: He completely abolished all state taxes, including octroi and custom duties, making Gondal a tax-free haven. The state’s revenues were instead generated from interest on state investments, railways, and municipal services.
- Infrastructure: Under his stewardship, the state built an extensive network of modern roads, railways, and bridges. Gondal was among the first states in Kathiawar to have underground drainage systems, electricity, and a well-planned water supply system.
- Social Equality: The Maharaja actively opposed the *purdah* system (veiling of women), encouraged women's participation in public life, and championed the upliftment of marginalized communities.
- Literature and Culture: He commissioned and oversaw the compilation of the monumental Bhagvadgomandal, a comprehensive nine-volume encyclopedia and dictionary of the Gujarati language. The digital archives of this massive linguistic achievement can be accessed on the official Bhagvadgomandal Portal.
State Heraldry and Flag
The State of Gondal possessed a distinctive coat of arms that reflected its Rajput heritage and its commitment to progressive governance. The shield depicted a hand holding a dagger (katara), representing valor and the defense of the realm, alongside a depiction of the historic Naulakha Palace. The supporters of the coat of arms were two Rajput warriors clad in traditional armor. The crest featured a falcon, symbolizing vigilance and nobility. The state motto inscribed below the shield was "Sajyam Cha Karishye" (meaning "I shall make it ready" or "I am prepared to act").
The state flag of Gondal was a rectangular bicolor, consisting of two equal horizontal bands of red and saffron (yellow). Red represented Rajput courage and sacrifice, while saffron symbolized purity, spirituality, and auspiciousness.
Post-Independence and Modern Era
Upon the partition and independence of India in August 1947, Maharaja Bhojrajji, who succeeded his father Bhagvatsinhji in 1944, signed the Instrument of Accession to the Dominion of India. On 15 February 1948, Gondal formally merged into the United State of Kathiawar (which later became the State of Saurashtra, and eventually merged into the bilingual Bombay State before becoming part of Gujarat in 1960).
Today, Gondal is celebrated as a major heritage and cultural hub in Gujarat. The magnificent heritage structures of the state, including the Naulakha Palace, the Riverside Palace, and the Orchard Palace, have been preserved beautifully. Several of these grand structures are now operating as heritage hotels, attracting historians and travelers from across the globe. The legacy of Maharaja Bhagvatsinhji's progressive town planning and emphasis on education continues to influence the civic life of modern Gondal.
