History

Origin and Genealogy

The Soor Jagir traces its historical lineage to the Rathore dynasty of Marwar (Jodhpur). The princely state of Idar was established in the early 18th century by Maharaja Anand Singhji, a son of Maharaja Ajit Singh of Jodhpur. Maharaja Shivsinhji, the grandson of Anand Singhji, ruled Idar from 1748 to 1791. Following his demise, the territory of Idar was partitioned and granted as appanages (feudal estates) among his younger sons to maintain their royal status. In circa 1792, the estate of Soor was granted to Maharaj Shri Indarsinhji Shivsinhji, the fifth son of Maharaja Shivsinhji, establishing the Soor branch of the Idar royal family.

British Period and Resumption of the Estate

During the late 18th and early 19th centuries, the Mahi Kantha region, which included the territory of Idar and its subordinate jagirs, faced significant administrative disruptions due to Maratha incursions by the Gaekwads of Baroda. In the early 19th century, the British East India Company intervened to establish political order, leading to treaties that defined the relations between the Maharaja of Idar and his feudatories. The Soor estate, like other smaller Rajput estates under the Idar State, operated under strict feudal obligations. Due to political developments or the lack of direct male heirs, the estate was subsequently resumed (reincorporated into the khalsa or state-controlled land) by the ruler of Idar under British paramountcy regulations.

Post-Independence and Modern Era

In 1947, upon the partition of British India, Maharaja Himmat Singhji of Idar signed the Instrument of Accession, merging the princely state into the Union of India. The territories of the former Idar State, including the region of the Soor Jagir, were initially incorporated into the Bombay State and later became part of the Sabarkantha district in the modern state of Gujarat following the linguistic reorganization of states in 1960. Today, the architectural remnants and local history of the estate remain a subject of interest for regional historians. Detailed administrative records of the region can be referenced through historical archives, such as the Idar State historical records on Wikipedia and the geographical compilations of the Imperial Gazetteer of India.
