History

Origin and Foundation

The historical lineage of Kotda Sangani is rooted in the Jadeja Rajput dynasty of Saurashtra. The state was founded in 1654–1655 by Kumar Shri Sangoji, the younger son of Thakor Saheb Kumbhoji I of Gondal. Upon his father's death, Sangoji's elder brother Sagramji ascended the throne of Gondal, while Sangoji received the village of Ardoi as an appanage (maintenance estate). An enterprising warrior and administrator, Sangoji consolidated his position, conquered adjacent territories from local Kathi and Babria clans, and elevated his small holding into a prominent Taluka. The cadet branch founded by him came to be known as the "Sangani" Jadejas.

In cooperation with Thakor Ranmalji of Rajkot, Sangoji launched several successful military campaigns, most notably the capture of the strategic town of Sardhar. Eventually, the rulers shifted their administrative headquarters from Ardoi to Kotda, renaming the settlement Kotda Sangani to distinguish it from other locations in Gujarat bearing similar names.

Consolidation and Maratha Period

During the 18th century, Kotda Sangani was caught in the geopolitical transitions of the Kathiawar peninsula as the Mughal Empire's influence waned. The rise of the Maratha Empire brought demands for tribute, known as peshkash, which was collected annually by the Gaekwads of Baroda and Peshwa forces. Despite these external pressures, the rulers of Kotda Sangani successfully preserved their autonomy and maintained their internal system of administration, adhering strictly to the rule of primogeniture regarding succession to the throne.

British Raj and Administrative Reforms

The state entered an era of peace and structured administration in the early 19th century under the British Raj. In 1807–1808, Kotda Sangani signed a security and tribute settlement during the historic Kathiawar mission conducted by Colonel Alexander Walker of the British East India Company. This settlement protected the state from external invasions in exchange for a fixed tribute paid to the Gaekwad of Baroda and the British government. Detailed records of this period are preserved in the Gazetteer of the Bombay Presidency: Kathiawar (Vol. VIII).

Classified as a Fourth Class State under the Halar division of the Kathiawar Agency, the Thakor of Kotda Sangani possessed considerable civil and criminal powers. By the late 19th century, the state maintained a disciplined force of cavalry, infantry, and ceremonial artillery. Successive rulers initiated progressive reforms, including the development of local schools, public health dispensaries, and irrigation networks that benefited the agricultural class.

Post-Independence and Modern Era

Following the independence of India in 1947, the last ruling Thakor of Kotda Sangani signed the Instrument of Accession, merging the principality into the Union of India. On February 15, 1948, the state officially integrated into the United State of Kathiawar, which later became known as Saurashtra State. Following subsequent administrative reorganizations, Kotda Sangani became a taluka within the Rajkot district of Gujarat State in 1960.

Today, Kotda Sangani is recognized as a developing administrative taluka in Rajkot district, preserving its historical heritage through local monuments, stepwells, and ancestral structures.
