History
Origin and Foundation
The princely state of Rairakhol (also known as Redhakhol), located in the hilly tracts of modern-day Odisha, boasts a rich and storied past. According to local traditions and historical chronicles, the ruling dynasty of Rairakhol shares its lineage with the rulers of Bonai, Seraikella, and Kharsawan. The rulers claim descent from four brothers who were Rathore Rajputs from Rajputana (modern-day Rajasthan) who migrated eastward and established their respective domains in the eastern wilderness. Historically, Rairakhol was a feudatory vassal, subordinate to the neighbouring Bamra State until the middle of the 18th century, when it successfully asserted its autonomy.
The Maratha Influence and British Suzerainty
During the 18th century, as the Mughal Empire's grip weakened over eastern India, the Maratha Empire, under the Bhonsles of Nagpur, extended its influence over the Odisha Garhjat (tributary) states. Rairakhol was forced to pay tribute to the Marathas. This period was marked by administrative instability and frequent incursions by Maratha bargis.
Following the defeat of the Marathas in the Second Anglo-Maratha War and the subsequent Treaty of Deogaon in 1803, the British East India Company began establishing its hegemony over the region. Although briefly restored to the Marathas, Rairakhol permanently came under British protection in 1818 after the Third Anglo-Maratha War. In 1867, the British government formally recognized the ruler of Rairakhol as a Feudatory Chief, granting a Sanad (charter) that defined the state’s political relations with the British Crown. For administrative purposes, it was placed under the political supervision of the Commissioner of the Chhattisgarh Division of the Central Provinces, before being transferred to the Eastern States Agency.
Key Reformers and Socio-Economic Development
The late 19th and early 20th centuries marked an era of modernization and administrative reforms in Rairakhol. Among its most prominent rulers was Raja Bishan Chandra Jenamani, who ascended the gaddi (throne) in 1825 and ruled for seventy-five years until his death in 1900. Raja Bishan Chandra was highly regarded for his benevolent administration. During the devastating Orissa Famine of 1866 (the Na'Anka Famine), the Raja opened the state granaries to feed his subjects and actively cooperated with British relief operations, saving thousands of lives.
He was succeeded by Raja Gaura Chandra Deo (1900–1906) and later by Raja Vir Chandra Jadumani Deo Jenamani (1906–1947). Under their administrations, several progressive reforms were implemented:
- Forestry and Revenue: Scientific management of the state's vast timber and forest resources was introduced, significantly boosting the state treasury.
- Education and Health: Primary and middle schools were established across the province. Charitable dispensaries were opened to provide modern healthcare to the tribal and rural populace.
- Infrastructure: Roads connecting the capital city of Rairakhol to Sambalpur and Cuttack were constructed, facilitating trade and communication.
Post-Independence and Modern Era
Following India's independence from British rule in August 1947, the rulers of the Eastern States Agency decided to integrate with the Indian Union. On 14 December 1947, the last ruling chief of Rairakhol signed the Instrument of Accession, merging his state into the province of Orissa (now Odisha). The formal merger took effect on 1 January 1948.
Today, the erstwhile territories of Rairakhol State form the Redhakhol subdivision within the Sambalpur District of Odisha. The town of Redhakhol retains its historical charm, with the old palace and royal temples serving as reminders of its rich princely heritage.
