History

Origin and Foundation of Nimaj Thikana

The history of Nimaj is intrinsically linked with the rise of the Udawat clan, a prominent sub-branch of the Rathores of Marwar. Rao Jodha, the founder of Jodhpur, had a grandson named Rao Udaji (the son of Rao Suja, who ruled Marwar from 1492 to 1515). Rao Udaji was a warrior of exceptional prowess who established his sway over the fertile tract of Jaitaran. His descendants came to be known as the Udawat Rathores, a clan celebrated for its martial legacy.

Over the decades, as the Udawat clan expanded, several prominent estates or Thikanas were established in the region. Among these, Nimaj emerged as one of the wealthiest and most strategically vital fiefdoms. It was classified as a first-class noble estate (Sirayat) of Marwar. The Thakurs of Nimaj enjoyed the highly coveted status of Double Tazim in the royal court of Jodhpur, holding the privilege of sitting in the immediate presence of the Maharaja during formal Darbars.

The Golden Era and Military Valor

Throughout the Mughal and Maratha periods, the Udawats of Nimaj were renowned for their unmatched chivalry and dedication to the throne of Marwar. By tradition, the Udawat clan was often granted the honor of leading the Harawal (the vanguard) of the Marwar state army in several crucial military campaigns. This position of immense responsibility and danger cemented their reputation as the protective shield of the state.

The region of Nimaj also boasts a rich cultural and architectural heritage that predates the Thikana itself. The famous Magarmandi Mata Temple, located in Nimaj, is a protected monument dating back to the 9th century. Built during the Gurjara-Pratihara style of architecture, it stands as a testament to the antiquity and spiritual importance of the region, which the rulers of Nimaj diligently patronized and preserved over the generations.

The British Period

With the signing of the treaty of alliance between the East India Company and the Jodhpur State in 1818, the region transitioned into an era of relative peace and administrative consolidation. During this period, the Thikana of Nimaj shifted its focus from constant warfare to administrative reforms, agricultural development, and architectural patronage. The grand Nimaj Palace (also known as Jakhan Bagh) was expanded during this era, showcasing a unique blend of traditional Rajput fort architecture and early 20th-century colonial design elements.

Post-Independence and Modern Era

Following India's independence in 1947, the princely state of Jodhpur merged into the United State of Greater Rajasthan in 1949. With the subsequent abolition of the Jagirdari system, the administrative and revenue-collecting rights of the Thikana were integrated into the democratic government of India.

Today, the legacy of the Nimaj Thikana is preserved by its descendants, who have converted the historic Nimaj Palace into a heritage hotel. This initiative has helped preserve the unique art, weapons, and historical artifacts of the Udawat Rathores while placing the historic town of Nimaj on the global heritage tourism map.
