History
Origin and Foundation
The state of Chuda was established during a period of significant political transition in the Kathiawar peninsula. Following the decline of central Mughal authority in Gujarat, local Rajput chieftains asserted their independence and consolidated their holdings. Kumar Shri Abhaisinhji Madhavsinhji, hailing from the ruling family of Wadhwan, carved out the territory of Chuda as an independent principality. Like other Jhala Rajput states in the region, such as Dhrangadhra, Limbdi, and Sayla, Chuda traced its lineage back to the legendary Harpaldevji and Shakti Devi, cementing its place among the proud Jhala clans of Saurashtra.
Mughal and Maratha Periods
During its formative decades, Chuda navigated the complex geopolitical rivalries of the 18th century. As the Mughal Empire's grip weakened, the Maratha Empire, led by the Peshwa and the Gaekwads of Baroda, began conducting regular military campaigns (known as Mulkgiri) to collect tribute from the Kathiawar states. Chuda, being a smaller principality, was forced to pay tribute (jama) to the Gaekwad of Baroda to preserve its internal autonomy. The rulers of Chuda successfully defended their borders and managed domestic affairs despite these external pressures and frequent territorial skirmishes with neighboring clans.
The British Raj and Administrative Status
In 1807-1808, Chuda entered into a settlement with the British East India Company and the Gaekwad, facilitated by Colonel Alexander Walker. This arrangement, known as the Walker Settlement, stabilized the tribute amounts and brought peace to the region by putting an end to annual military incursions.
Under British administration, Chuda was classified as a Third Class state within the Kathiawar Political Agency of the Bombay Presidency. The Thakore Sahibs of Chuda exercised limited civil and criminal jurisdictional powers. For more detailed historical classifications of these states, see the Gazetteer of the Bombay Presidency: Kathiawar (Volume VIII).
Key Reformers and Prominent Rulers
The rulers of Chuda, styled as Thakore Sahibs, were known for their paternalistic administration and efforts to modernize the state. Notable rulers included:
- Thakore Sahib Bhorajji Becharsinhji (1854–1908): His long reign brought stability and witnessed the introduction of basic educational and judicial reforms in the state.
- Thakore Sahib Bahadursinhji Joravarsinhji (1908–1947): Ascending the gaddi in 1908, he ruled during a crucial period of transition. He prioritized social welfare, modern healthcare, and agricultural development, helping Chuda transition smoothly into the mid-20th century. For archival records on his reign, refer to the Memoranda on the Indian States.
Heraldry and the State Flag
The heraldic symbols of Chuda reflected its proud Jhala heritage. The state flag was a traditional Rajput heraldic banner, heavily featuring the auspicious colors of the Jhala clan, often dominated by shades of saffron and red. The state coat of arms featured a shield supported by Rajput warriors or local fauna, crested by a representation of the family deity, Shakti Devi, who is traditionally credited with saving the ancestors of the Jhala clan. The state's motto emphasized duty, honor, and protection of the realm.
Post-Independence and Modern Era
Following India's independence in August 1947, the last ruler, Thakore Sahib Bahadursinhji, signed the Instrument of Accession to the Dominion of India. On February 15, 1948, Chuda formally merged into the United State of Kathiawar (later renamed Saurashtra State).
Following subsequent administrative reorganizations, Saurashtra was merged into Bombay State in 1956, and eventually became a part of the newly formed state of Gujarat in 1960. Today, Chuda exists as a town and a taluka headquarters within the Surendranagar district of Gujarat, retaining its rich cultural heritage and historical monuments, including the royal palace and stepwells, as symbols of its princely past.
