History

The estate was founded in 1596 by Kunwar Mukund Das, a grandson of Rao Maldev of Marwar. Nestled amidst the rugged valleys of the Aravalli Range in the Jalore district of Rajasthan, Bhadrajun holds a rich legacy blending Hindu mythology, strategic military campaigns, and royal Rathore heritage.

Mythological and Ancient Origins

According to local folklore and Hindu epic traditions, the name "Bhadrajun" is a portmanteau of the names of Subhadra (the sister of Lord Krishna) and Arjuna (the Pandava warrior). It is believed that Bhadrajun was the valley where Arjuna and Subhadra married after eloping from Dwaraka. A temple dedicated to the couple, situated within a natural cave on the nearby hilltops, stands as a testimony to this popular regional legend.

The Mughal Era and Strategic Resistance

Prior to its formal establishment as a Thikana, the valley of Bhadrajun played a pivotal role in the Rajput resistance against the Mughal Empire. During the late 16th century, Rao Chandrasen of Marwar—historically recognized for his fierce resistance against Emperor Akbar—utilized the formidable hilly terrain of Bhadrajun as his primary military stronghold. Following his refusal to submit to Akbar at the Nagaur Durbar in 1570, Rao Chandrasen retreated to Bhadrajun. Mughal forces subsequently launched an offensive and laid siege to the valley, forcing Chandrasen to eventually withdraw further into the hills of Siwana.

Establishment of the Jagir

Following the turbulent decades of Mughal conflict, the estate was formally established in 1596 by Kunwar Mukund Das. Under his lineage, Bhadrajun developed into a prominent "Thikana" (vassal state) of the Jodhpur (Marwar) State. The rulers constructed the Bhadrajun Fort on a crescent-shaped hill, designing it with strategic bastions, fortified ramparts, and tactical lookout points to safeguard the mountain pass leading into the Marwar plains.

British Raj and Administrative Prominence

During the British colonial era, the Thakurs of Bhadrajun maintained their semi-autonomous administrative status under the Jodhpur State, which was a part of the Rajputana Agency. The rulers of the estate actively participated in the military and administrative affairs of the Marwar state, securing their status among the premier nobles of the region. For further geographic and regional context, see the Bhadrajun Wikipedia Page.

Post-Independence and Modern Era

With India's independence in 1947 and the subsequent integration of princely states, the Bhadrajun Jagir was formally merged into the State of Rajasthan. The Jagirdari system was abolished, but the cultural and architectural heritage of the estate remained. Today, the ancestral Bhadrajun Fort has been preserved and converted into a heritage hotel, managed by the descendants of the ruling family, keeping the historical legacy of the Rathores of Bhadrajun alive for travelers and historians alike.
