History

The family claims descent from Ajay Raj Chauhan founder of Ajmer. Thakur Tilak Singh Chauhan came and settled from Ajmer to Kumiila, his son Thakur Chatur Singh Chauhan was in British Army and was granted Zamindari near Comilla (now a district in present day Bangladesh) for his assistance to the Army in 1857.

Apart from the zamindari, the family had business interests and owned 22 brick kilns which were managed by a french manager and a construction company which constructed the Assam-Bengal Railway.

Rai Bahadur Anand Chandra Singh Roy was conferred with the title of Rai Bahadur in 1912 and was one of the most illustrious member of the family. He was known for large endowments and social contributions and donated 29 acres and made the famous Comilla Victoria Government College, which was inaugurated on 24th September 1899, he also made the Victoria High School in Comilla. The family made huge donation to Ram Mala Library in Comilla. He created a model farm for the benefit of his subjects. He also built a dharamshala for the Goddess Kali temple in Mehar near Comilla. He also helped found Comilla Banking Corporation which was started by Narendra Chandra Dutta in 1914 bank which was later merged with United Bank of India. The annual festival in Comilla called ‘Ananda Mela’ on Bengali New Year Day used to be held on the property owned by Rai Bahadur Ananda Singh Roy in his honour. Rai Bahadur Anand Singh Roy was also conferred with M.B.E. by the british government towards his contributions.

A Marble bust was erected inside the Victoria College in as a mark of respect for his contribution as founder of the college, which still stands today. Rai Gobindpur is one of the hindu families, whose valuable contribution, is still recognized by the Bangladesh Government.

The estate consisted of 16 parganas in 1945 extends over Parganas Homnabad, Chowdagram, Tora, Mehar and Narsingpur etc. The family owned many residential properties in Kolkata as well. The family adopted the surname ‘Roy’ after being granted the title of ‘Rai Bahadur’. Rai Gobindpur was a divisible zamindari.

The zamindars of Rai Gobindpur were friends with the family of legendary musician Sachin Dev Burman, who would be a regular at the Singh Roys mansion in Comilla.
