History
Origins and Foundation (1609)
The foundation of Kishangarh is a classic story of an ambitious younger prince carving out his own kingdom.
- The Jodhpur Lineage: Prince Kishan Singh was the second son of Raja Udai Singh (popularly known as the Mota Raja) of Marwar (Jodhpur).
- The Imperial Reward: Kishan Singh was a brilliant military commander who served with distinction under the Mughal Emperor Akbar. In recognition of his valor in imperial campaigns, he was granted a tract of land near Ajmer.
- The New Capital: In 1609, Prince Kishan Singh founded his independent capital city on the banks of Lake Gundolav, naming it Kishangarh. He successfully consolidated power over the local Jat and Gurjar communities, establishing a sovereign Rathore state independent of Jodhpur.
The Golden Age of Art: Savant Singh and Bani Thani
The mid-18th century marked the zenith of Kishangarh’s cultural history, transforming it from a minor military state into the artistic jewel of Rajasthan. This era was entirely shaped by Maharaja Savant Singh (r. 1748–1765).
- The Poet King: Savant Singh was deeply spiritual, a scholar of Sanskrit, and a devout follower of the Pushtimarg (Vaishnavite) tradition. He wrote exquisite devotional poetry dedicated to Radha and Krishna under the pen name Nagari Das.
- Bani Thani (The Indian Mona Lisa): Savant Singh fell passionately in love with a singer and poetess in his stepmother's court known as Bani Thani (meaning "The Decked-Out One"). Her striking features, deep spirituality, and artistic brilliance became the ultimate muse for the state.
- The Kishangarh School of Art: Savant Singh commissioned the master painter Nihal Chand to visually immortalize his poetry. Nihal Chand developed a completely unique style of miniature painting characterized by exaggerated, elongated features—lotus-shaped eyes, arched eyebrows, pointed chins, and slender fingers. The portraits of Bani Thani from this era are globally celebrated as masterpieces of Indian art.
Exhausted by intense family succession disputes and seeking absolute spiritual devotion, Maharaja Savant Singh eventually abdicated his throne in 1757. He retired to the holy town of Vrindavan alongside Bani Thani, where they spent their remaining days as ascetics.
The British Treaty (1818)
Following the departure of Savant Singh, Kishangarh entered a turbulent period marked by internal factions and the devastating regional raids of the Maratha confederacy and Pindari freebooters.
- The 1818 Alliance: Seeking security and stability, Maharaja Kalyan Singh signed a Treaty of Perpetual Friendship and Alliance with the British East India Company on March 26, 1818.
- The Salute Status: Under the British Central India Agency, Kishangarh was recognized as a prominent state and was granted a permanent 15-gun salute, reflecting its high aristocratic and historical standing among the Rajput houses.
Modernization under Sir Madan Singh (1900–1915)
At the dawn of the 20th century, Kishangarh underwent sweeping structural modernization under Maharaja Sir Madan Singh.
Though his reign was relatively short, he was a highly progressive administrator. He established modern civil courts, built a network of metalled roads, introduced a state postal system, and set up a state-of-the-art cotton press and industrial mills, leveraging Kishangarh's position on the newly built railway lines connecting Delhi and Bombay.
Vexillology and State Symbols
- The State Flag: The flag of Kishangarh State was a rectangular horizontal bicolor of white and red. Red symbolized the fierce martial traditions of the Rathore clan, while white represented the purity, peace, and deep spiritual legacy of the state's Vaishnavite roots.
- The Coat of Arms: The official heraldic shield of Kishangarh featured a central castle on a hill flanked by two falcons acting as supporters. The state motto inscribed below was: "Kishan Kirti Vardhata" (May the Fame of Kishan Increase).
Accession to India
Following the end of British paramountcy in August 1947, the last ruling monarch, Maharaja Sumair Singh, signed the Instrument of Accession to the Union of India.
Kishangarh formally merged into the United State of Greater Rajasthan on April 7, 1949. Today, the historic territory of Kishangarh survives as a bustling city in Rajasthan, globally famous as the "Marble City of India" for its massive marble processing industry, while proudly maintaining its heritage as the cradle of the Kishangarh school of painting.
