History
The Payagpur Taluk, situated in the Bahraich district of Oudh (modern-day Uttar Pradesh), was a prominent estate ruled by the Janwar clan of Rajputs, who trace their lineage to the regional migration of Bariar Sah Janwar in the 14th century. Established as an offshoot of the premier Janwar house of Balrampur, the estate of Payagpur rose to great political and economic significance during the Mughal era and subsequent British Raj, particularly after the annexation of Oudh and the passage of the Oudh Estates Act of 1869. Under British rule, the Taluqdars of Payagpur were officially recognized with the hereditary title of Raja, with rulers like Raja Bhupendra Narayan Singh actively contributing to local governance, agricultural reforms, and educational philanthropy in the Bahraich region. Following India's independence and the subsequent abolition of the Zamindari system in 1951, the family transitioned successfully into democratic civic life while preserving their cultural heritage and architectural legacy in modern Uttar Pradesh.
