Ghund

Origin and Foundation

The state of Ghund was founded by a branch of the Chandel Rajput dynasty. According to local historical traditions and the Simla Hill States Gazetteers, the founders of the neighboring states of Theog, Madhan, and Ghund were brothers, all of whom were the sons of a Chandel Rajput emigrant from Jaipur. This common descent established a close-knit fraternal alliance among the three principalities, positioning them as key local players in the complex political landscape of the Simla Hills.

The Gurkha Occupation and British Suzerainty

Like many neighboring hill states, Ghund faced severe disruptions in the early 19^th century due to the westward expansion of the Gurkha Empire. The Gurkhas occupied the region, forcing the local chieftains into submission. This period of turmoil ended with the Anglo-Nepalese War (1814–1816), when British forces under General David Ochterlony expelled the Gurkhas from the hill territories.

Following the expulsion of the Gurkhas, the British government reorganized the region's administration. By a treaty settlement or sanad dated September 1815, Ghund was formally placed under the suzerainty of the larger state of Keonthal. Under this arrangement, the Thakur of Ghund retained administrative autonomy over his fief but was obligated to pay an annual tribute and render military service to the Raja of Keonthal. Post-Independence and Modern Era

Following the end of British rule in 1947, the ruler of Ghund, along with other rulers of the Simla Hill States, signed the Instrument of Accession to join the newly independent Dominion of India. On April 15, 1948, Ghund was formally integrated into the Indian Union, becoming part of the newly established province of Himachal Pradesh.
