Origin and Foundation of Theog State

The princely state of Theog, nestled in the strategic heights of the Simla Hills, traces its lineage to the prestigious Chandel Rajput clan. According to local historical traditions and imperial records, the ruling family of Theog shares a common descent with the founders of the neighboring states of Ghund and Madhan. The founders of these three states were brothers, sons of a Chandel Rajput prince who migrated from Jaipur. This shared brotherhood established a closely-knit trio of fiefdoms that frequently acted in alliance throughout their history.

For centuries, the Thakurs of Theog ruled their small mountainous principality, preserving their distinct martial traditions and feudal autonomy amidst the shifting political landscapes of the Western Himalayas.

The Gurkha Occupation and Subordination to Keonthal (1815)

In the early 19^th century, the expansion of the Gurkha Empire from Nepal disrupted the peace of the Simla Hill States. Theog, along with its neighbors, fell under the oppressive rule of the Gurkhas between 1803 and 1815. The regional chiefs were forced into exile or rendered tributary to the Gurkha commanders.

The situation changed with the outbreak of the Anglo-Nepalese War. Following the defeat of the Gurkhas by the British forces under General David Ochterlony, the political map of the region was reorganized. By a British sanad (treaty decree) dated September 1815, Theog was formally made subordinate to the larger state of Keonthal. Under this arrangement, while the Thakur of Theog retained internal administrative autonomy over his subjects, the state was required to pay an annual tribute and remain loyal to the Raja of Keonthal under British paramountcy. The Democratic Upsurge and Key Reformers

Theog holds a unique and highly prestigious position in the modern political history of India. During the mid-20^th century, as the Indian independence movement gained momentum, the people of Theog actively participated in the Praja Mandal movement, which opposed the autocratic rule of local rulers and demanded integration with a democratic India.

Under the visionary leadership of local reformers and freedom fighters, most notably Surat Singh Vaid, the people of Theog staged a historic uprising. In August 1947, just days before India officially declared independence, Theog became the very first princely state in India to successfully establish a democratic companion government, forcing the ruling chief to surrender his administrative authority to a popularly elected council. This pioneering event became a catalyst for the merger of other hill states into the Indian Union.

Post-Independence and Modern Era

Following the integration of the princely states, Theog formally merged with the Indian Union and became a part of the newly formed province of Himachal Pradesh on April 15, 1948.
