History

Origin and Foundation

The history of Bhinai is deeply intertwined with the royal house of Rao Chandrasen of Marwar, a contemporary of Mughal Emperor Akbar who famously resisted Mughal hegemony. Following the turbulent period of Chandrasen's reign, his younger son, Rao Agar Sen (also documented as Ugra Sen in regional archives), carved out his own sphere of influence in the strategic frontier of Ajmer. This led to the establishment of the Bhinai estate. Over generations, the descendants of Rao Agar Sen consolidated their position, establishing Bhinai as a premier Rathore fiefdom in the heart of Rajasthan.

The Mughal and Maratha Epochs

Due to its geographical proximity to Ajmer, which served as a seat of imperial power for both the Mughals and later the Marathas, Bhinai occupied a highly strategic position. The rulers of Bhinai deftly navigated these shifting geopolitical alliances. In the late 18th century, during the intense Rajput-Maratha conflicts, the Bhinai house rendered invaluable military assistance to the Rathore state of Jodhpur. In recognition of this valorous service, Maharaja Vijay Singh of Jodhpur officially bestowed the hereditary title of Raja upon Kalyan Singh, the then Chief of Bhinai, in 1783.

The British Raj and Istimrari Status

With the signing of the Treaty of Gwalior in 1818, the British East India Company assumed control of Ajmer-Merwara from the Scindias of Gwalior. Under British administration, Bhinai was recognized as the premier Istimrari estate (a landholding held at a fixed, permanent tribute or revenue) of the district. The Raja of Bhinai sat at the head of the local aristocracy, holding judicial, administrative, and revenue collection rights over dozens of tributary villages. Details of this unique land tenure system and Bhinai's prominent position can be explored in the historical Imperial Gazetteer of India.

Raja Mangal Singh Bahadur and Reforms

One of the most illustrious and progressive rulers of the estate was Raja Mangal Singh Bahadur, who succeeded to the gaddi (throne) in 1871. He was highly regarded for his administrative acumen and modern outlook. Under the British administration of Ajmer-Merwara, he served with distinction as an Honorary Magistrate and Subordinate Judge, modernizing the local judicial mechanisms. For his exemplary public service, he was awarded the personal title of Raja Bahadur during the historic Delhi Durbar on January 1, 1877. His contributions to regional welfare and loyalty to the crown were further recognized in 1879, when he was admitted as a Companion of the Most Eminent Order of the Indian Empire (CIE).

Post-Independence and Modern Era

Following India's independence in 1947 and the subsequent integration of princely states, the Istimrari land system of Ajmer-Merwara was formally abolished under local land reform acts. Consequently, the administrative powers of the Bhinai estate were integrated into the modern democratic framework of the state of Rajasthan. Today, the town of Bhinai exists as a significant historical and administrative block within the Ajmer district. The grand Bhinai Fort still stands as a testament to the architectural and martial heritage of the Rathore dynasty, drawing historians and cultural enthusiasts alike.
