History

Origin and Foundation of Thikana Khood

The historical Thikana of Khood (historically also spelled as Khud) is a prominent estate located in the Sikar district of Rajasthan, India. Khood was established as a premier principality under the rule of the Shekhawat clan, a vibrant branch of the Kachwaha dynasty of Amber (later Jaipur). The lineage of the rulers of Khood traces back directly to Rao Shekha (1433–1488 AD), the eponymous founder of the Shekhawat clan, who carved out an independent realm in the historical region of Shekhawati.

The founders of Khood were descendants of the Jiwansinghot sub-branch of the Shekhawats, deriving their name from Thakur Jiwan Singh. Over the centuries, these noblemen established themselves as formidable rulers, loyal allies, and military commanders for the Maharajas of Jaipur. The strategic geographical position of Khood made it a vital frontier outpost, guarding the trade routes across the semi-arid plains of northern Rajasthan.

The Golden Age and Strategic Significance

During the 17th and 18th centuries, Khood rose to prominence as a First-Class Tazimi Thikana of the Jaipur State. The Thakurs (lords) of Khood exercised judicial, administrative, and revenue-collecting powers over their territories. They maintained a well-equipped standing army consisting of cavalry and infantry to protect their borders from neighboring rival factions and nomadic bandits.

Khood’s rulers were known for their close ties to the royal court of Jaipur. They actively participated in the military campaigns led by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II and his successors. Their bravery on the battlefield earned them several titles, high-ranking administrative positions, and expansion of their land grants (Jagirs) from the Jaipur Darbar.

Mughal and Maratha Relations

During the decline of the Mughal Empire in the 18th century, the Shekhawati region faced significant political instability. The rise of Maratha influence in North India led to frequent incursions by Maratha commanders, such as the Scindias and Holkars, who demanded heavy tributes (Chauth) from the Rajput principalities.

The Thakurs of Khood, alongside other Shekhawat chieftains of Panchpana and Sikar, put up a stout defense against these external threats. Despite the heavy economic burden imposed by these conflicts, Khood successfully preserved its cultural identity and territorial integrity by leveraging strategic alliances and military fortification.

British Raj and Administrative Reforms

With the signing of the Treaty of 1818 between the East India Company and the Kingdom of Jaipur, Khood entered a period of relative peace and stability. Under the British paramountcy, the military role of the Thikana subsided, giving way to administrative and social modernization.

During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, under the guidance of progressive rulers, Khood implemented several administrative reforms. The land revenue system was streamlined, and efforts were made to improve agricultural productivity in the region through the construction of wells and water-harvesting structures.

Architectural Heritage and Key Reformers

The legacy of Khood is immortalized in its grand architecture. The Khood Fort stands as a magnificent example of Rajput military architecture, featuring imposing ramparts, decorated arches, and delicate fresco paintings that are characteristic of the Shekhawati style.

The rulers of Khood were also great patrons of art, literature, and religion. They commissioned several grand temples, cenotaphs (Chhatris), and public stepwells (Baoris) to serve the local population. Prominent among the social reforms initiated by the Thakurs was the promotion of traditional crafts and trade, which transformed Khood into a bustling local market hub during the colonial era.

Post-Independence Era and Modern Khood

Following India's independence in 1947, the princely state of Jaipur merged into the newly formed United State of Greater Rajasthan. Under the leadership of the last ruling Thakur, the transition of power from the feudal estate to a democratic system was executed smoothly. The Jagirdari abolition acts of the early 1950s officially brought an end to the feudal privileges of the Khood estate.

Today, Khood is recognized as a culturally rich town within the Sikar district of Rajasthan. The descendants of the royal house continue to preserve their ancestral heritage, and the fort remains a symbol of the historic valour and cultural richness of the Shekhawat clan.
