History
Origin and Ancestry
The rulers of Patan Jagir belong to the Solanki (Chaulukya) clan of Rajputs, tracing their lineage back to the Solanki rulers who once held sway over vast portions of Gujarat and Rajputana. The specific lineage of Patan branched out from Toda (present-day Toda Rai Singh in the Tonk district of Rajasthan), which was a prominent Solanki stronghold. Rao Balan of Toda was a key ancestral figure, whose fourth son, Thakur Bheem Singh, carved out his own sphere of influence in the Kherada region.
Mandalgarh Connection and Mughal Era
Thakur Bheem Singh’s descendants established their control over the strategic region of Kherada and held the historic Mandalgarh Fort. During the Mughal Emperor Akbar’s military campaign against Chittorgarh in 1567–1568, Mandalgarh served as a crucial outpost. The Solanki chieftains of this line defended their territories during this turbulent period of conflict between the Mughal Empire and the Mewar State.
Establishment of Patan under Salumber
In later generations, geopolitical shifts led Thakur Hindu Singh to migrate from Kherada (Mandalgarh) to Salumber, one of the premier Chundawat estates of Mewar. Recognizing his noble lineage and military prowess, the Rawat of Salumber granted him a Jagir comprising seven villages. His successor, Thakur Bhopal Singh, was subsequently granted the specific villages of Patan and Payari, marking the formal establishment of the Patan Solanki branch as prominent sub-vassals of the Udaipur (Mewar) state through the Salumber chiefdom.
Post-Independence and Modern Era
With India's independence in 1947 and the subsequent integration of princely states, the Mewar State merged into the United State of Rajasthan. The feudal Jagirdari system was formally abolished under the Rajasthan Land Reforms and Resumption of Jagirs Act, 1952. Consequently, the administrative and revenue powers of the Patan Thikana were transferred to the state government. Today, Patan is recognized as a historic village situated in the Salumber region of southern Rajasthan, preserving the legacy of its Solanki Rajput ancestors.
