History

Origin and Foundation

The state of Madhan, situated in the rugged terrain of the Shimla Hills, traces its origin to the Chandel dynasty of Rajputs. According to historical traditions, the ruling family of Madhan shares a common ancestry with the founders of the neighboring states of Theog and Ghund. The founders of these three states were brothers, sons of a Chandel Rajput immigrant who had migrated from Jaipur (or Bilaspur in some accounts) and established their rule in the region. This shared lineage fostered close political and cultural ties between these three hill principalities throughout the medieval and modern eras.

The Gurkha Invasion and British Rule

During the early 19th century, the expansionist Gurkha Empire of Nepal invaded the Simla Hill States, forcing the local chiefs, including the Thakur of Madhan, into exile or subjugation. The Gurkha occupation was marked by heavy taxation and administrative upheaval. Following the Anglo-Nepalese War (1814–1816), the British East India Company expelled the Gurkhas from the region under the leadership of General David Ochterlony.

Following the British victory, a political resettlement of the region was initiated. By a imperial sanad (charter) dated September 1815, the British administration restored the local chiefs but reorganized the administrative hierarchy of the Simla Hills. Under this settlement, Madhan was made subordinate as a tributary state under the suzerainty of Keonthal State. The Thakur of Madhan was required to pay an annual tribute (tribute money or khiraj) to the Raja of Keonthal and provide military or administrative assistance when summoned, under the oversight of the British Political Agent of the Simla Hill States.

Post-Independence and Modern Era

Following India's independence in 1947, the ruling family of Madhan, led by its last formal ruler, signed the Instrument of Accession to merge with the Indian Union. On April 15, 1948, Madhan, along with 29 other princely states of the Punjab Hills, was integrated to form the newly created province of Himachal Pradesh. Administratively, the territory of Madhan was initially incorporated into the Mahasu district and later became part of the Shimla district of modern-day Himachal Pradesh. Today, the heritage of the Chandel rulers of Madhan is preserved in local folk traditions and the historic architecture of the region.
