History

Origin and Foundation of the Morvi State

The princely state of Morvi (often spelled Morvee or Morbi) was founded in the late 17th century by the Jadeja clan of Rajputs, who trace their ancestry to the Lunar Dynasty (Chandravanshi). The state's establishment is closely linked to the royal house of Cutch (Kutch). In 1697, the Heir Apparent of Kutch, Kumar Shri Ravaji, was murdered by his brother Pragji I (who subsequently seized the throne of Bhuj).

In 1698, Kanyaji, the young son of the murdered prince Ravaji, fled Bhuj with his mother to escape the political instability. He sought refuge in the Wagad region and established himself at Kataria. Shortly thereafter, Kanyaji marched south across the Little Rann of Kutch, seized the strategic town of Morvi, and laid the foundation of an independent Jadeja principality. From 1698 onwards, Morvi remained a sovereign state, acting as a crucial bridge between the Kathiawar peninsula and the Cutch region.

Mughal, Maratha, and British Alliances

During the early 18th century, Morvi operated under the nominal suzerainty of the Mughal Empire's Viceroy (Subahdar) of Gujarat. Following Kanyaji's death in 1734, his second son, Aliaji, succeeded him. Aliaji's successor, Kumar Shri Ravaji II, successfully expanded the state's frontiers by capturing several strategic villages from the Jam Sahib of Nawanagar. He fortified the town of Morvi, constructed strong defensive walls, and built several public edifices to secure his borders.

By the mid-18th century, the decline of Mughal authority allowed the Maratha Empire, led by the Peshwa and the Gaekwad of Baroda, to exact tribute (known as Mulkgiri) from the Kathiawar states. This period was marked by constant warfare, border skirmishes with Cutch, and internal rebellions. Peace and stability were restored in 1807-1808 when the British East India Company, represented by Colonel Alexander Walker, negotiated the historic "Walker's Settlement." Under this treaty, Morvi accepted British suzerainty and became a British protectorate, securing its borders against external invasions and stabilizing its tribute payments to the Gaekwad. This settlement is detailed extensively in the Gazetteer of the Bombay Presidency: Kathiawar, Volume VIII (1884).

The Era of Modernization and Key Reformers

Morvi transitioned into a highly progressive state during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, primarily due to the visionary leadership of two key reformers:

  • Maharaja Thakore Saheb Sir Waghji II Ravaji (r. 1870–1922): Having assumed full ruling powers in 1879 after a period of British regency, Sir Waghji II transformed Morvi into a model state. He introduced the Morvi State Railway, a tramway network connecting the port of Vavania to the interior, and established the state's first telecommunication lines. He banned local money lenders in favor of low-interest state loans to protect farmers, upgraded Vavania port, and constructed the modern industrial port of Naulakha. For his administrative brilliance, Morvi was elevated to a First Class State with an 11-gun salute in 1887. He also commissioned the iconic Jhulta Pul (Suspension Bridge) over the Machchhu River, a marvel of Victorian engineering.
  • Maharaja Thakore Saheb Sir Lakhdhirji Waghji (r. 1922–1948): Sir Lakhdhirji continued his father’s legacy of industrialization. He established the town’s first power house, telephone exchanges, and scientific agricultural models. Recognizing the potential of local clay deposits, he laid the foundation for the clay, pottery, and ceramic industries that would later define the region's economy. In 1951, he donated his grand palace to establish the Lakhdhirji Engineering College (LE College), fostering technical education in western India.

Post-Independence, Mergers, and the Modern Era

Following the partition of India in 1947, Maharaja Lakhdhirji signed the Instrument of Accession to the Dominion of India on 15 August 1947. Shortly thereafter, he abdicated the throne in favor of his eldest son, Maharaja Mahendrasinhji. In 1948, the state formally merged into the United State of Kathiawar (later renamed Saurashtra State), which eventually became part of bilingual Bombay State in 1956, and finally the state of Gujarat in 1960.

In August 1979, Morvi faced its greatest tragedy when the Machchhu II Dam burst, causing a catastrophic flash flood that destroyed large parts of the historic town and claimed thousands of lives. Despite this disaster, the resilient people of Morvi rebuilt the city. Today, Morvi is recognized globally as India's "Ceramic Capital," producing over 80% of the country’s ceramic tiles and sanitaryware, alongside major clock-manufacturing industries.
