Bhukarka

Introduction and Origins

Bhukarka is the ancestral seat of the Sringot (Shringot) clan of Bika Rathores. Rulers of Bhukarka are descendants of Maharaj Sring Ji (also spelled Shring Ji), son of the illustrious Rao Jait Singh of Bikaner. As a prominent branch of the Bika Rathore dynasty, the House of Bhukarka has historically held a highly revered position in the aristocratic hierarchy of the erstwhile Bikaner State.

The Foundation of the Thikana and Royal Grant

The estate of Bhukarka was formally established as a premier fiefdom in the mid-16^th century. In 1552 A.D., during a period of consolidation of the Bikaner territory, the estate consisted of 28 strategic villages. The formal grant of the estate was bestowed by Raja Rai Singhji of Bikaner, who was one of the most powerful rulers of Bikaner and a distinguished imperial general. The location of Bhukarka, situated in the modern-day Nohar region of Hanumangarh district, made it a vital outpost for safeguarding the northern frontiers of the desert kingdom.

Feudal Status and Court Privileges

The Chief of Bhukarka is the premiere noble of Bikaner State and enjoys supreme ceremonial honors in the royal court. The estate ranks fourth among the nobles of Bikaner. Within the Bikaner Darbar, the Thakur of Bhukarka was accorded the rare honors of:

• Double Tazim Sirayat: A highly prestigious honor where the Maharaja of Bikaner would stand up to receive the Thakur of Bhukarka upon his arrival in the court and would stand again when he took his leave.
• Kurab Hath: A gesture of royal favor where the sovereign would place his hand on the noble's shoulder or chest as a sign of supreme trust and affection.

Military Contributions and the Mughal Era

Throughout the Mughal and Maratha periods, the Shringot Rathores of Bhukarka proved their mettle on various battlefields. They served as a bulwark against external incursions from the north and west, particularly defending the state's borders against hostile clans. Under the leadership of successive Thakurs, the Bhukarka forces fought alongside the state armies of Bikaner in several regional conflicts and imperial campaigns dispatched by the Mughal court, cementing their reputation as fierce warriors and loyal vassals.

The British Era and Treaty of 1818

With the signing of the Treaty of Delhi in 1818 between the East India Company and Maharaja Surat Singh of Bikaner, the geopolitical landscape changed. While the treaty brought external security, it also led to internal friction between the Bikaner Durbar and its powerful feudal barons, including the Thakur of Bhukarka. Over the 19^th and early 20^th centuries, the rulers of Bhukarka successfully navigated these turbulent political waters, maintaining their autonomy, managing local revenue, and implementing administrative improvements within their vassal villages under British paramountcy.

Post-Independence and the Modern Era

Following India's independence in 1947, Bikaner State formally integrated into the United State of Greater Rajasthan in 1949. With the passage of the Rajasthan Land Reforms and Resumption of Jagirs Act, the traditional jagirdari system was officially abolished. The estate of Bhukarka surrendered its administrative and revenue-collecting powers to the democratic government of India.

Today, the descendants of the Bhukarka royal lineage continue to preserve their rich cultural heritage, historical fortresses, and ancestral temples. Bhukarka itself has transitioned into a thriving historical locality within the Hanumangarh district of Rajasthan, remembered as a cradle of Shringot valour.
