History

Origin and Foundation of Alipura State

The princely state of Alipura, situated in the historic Bundelkhand region of Central India, was established in 1757. The ruling dynasty of Alipura belonged to the Parihar (Pratihara) clan of Rajputs, claiming direct lineage from the ancient Gwalior dynasty. The family traces its ancestry back to Raja Jhujhar Singh, who was the second son of Parihar Raja Mahipaksha Deo of Gwalior in the 13th century.

Following the decline of the central Parihar authority in Gwalior, descendants of this royal line migrated southward into the rugged terrains of Bundelkhand. In 1757, Aman Singh Parihar, a noble descendant of Raja Jhujhar Singh, carved out an independent territory. He received a land grant and formal recognition of his estate from Raja Hindupat, the Bundela ruler of Panna State. This event marked the sovereign foundation of the Alipura principality, with its capital established at the town of Alipura (now located in the Chhatarpur district of Madhya Pradesh, India).

The British Era and the 1857 Uprising

With the expansion of the British East India Company into Central India during the early 19th century, Alipura came under British suzerainty. In 1808, during the reign of Rao Pratap Singh, the British government granted a Sanad (charter) to the ruler, formally confirming him in the possession of his lands in exchange for an oath of allegiance. This transitioned Alipura into a protected state under the Bundelkhand Agency.

During the tumultuous period of the 1857 Indian Uprising (First War of Independence), the ruler of Alipura, Rao Hindupat, made a strategic decision to maintain steadfast loyalty to the British Crown. Alipura provided crucial logistical support, intelligence, and supplies to the British forces led by Major General Sir Hugh Rose during the Central Indian campaign. In recognition of this valuable assistance, the British Government rewarded Rao Hindupat by remitting the tribute (tribute exemption) and consolidating his authority over the state.

The traditional title of the ruling family was historically Sawai Rao. However, over time, the rulers simply styled themselves as "Rao". On January 1, 1877, at the historic Delhi Imperial Assemblage (Delhi Durbar) held to proclaim Queen Victoria as the Empress of India, the ruling chief, Rao Chhatrrapati Singh, was decorated with the additional personal title of Rao Bahadur by the Viceroy, Lord Lytton.

State Administration, Heraldry, and Military Strength

By the late 19th century, Alipura was a well-administered third-class state under the Bundelkhand Agency. According to the Imperial Gazetteer of India, the state covered an area of approximately 73 square miles and possessed a modest but highly disciplined defense force. In 1893, the Rao Bahadur of Alipura maintained a military establishment consisting of:

  • 6 Cavalry troopers for ceremonial escorts and frontier patrols.
  • 277 Infantry soldiers tasked with internal security and garrison duties.
  • 3 Artillery guns used primarily for ceremonial salutes.

The state's heraldry and flag reflected its proud Rajput heritage. The state flag was a traditional triangular swallow-tailed design, featuring the sacred colors of saffron and red, symbolizing Rajput chivalry and sacrifice. The state's coat of arms featured a shield depicting a fort (referencing the historic Alipura Garhi) flanked by supporters of the royal house, typically representing tigers or Rajput warriors, reflecting their military lineage.

Post-Independence Integration and Modern Era

Following the departure of the British and the partition of India in 1947, the last ruling chief of Alipura, Rao Bahadur Raghuraj Singh, signed the Instrument of Accession to join the Dominion of India on August 15, 1947.

In 1948, Alipura was formally merged into the newly formed Union of Vindhya Pradesh. This territory was subsequently integrated into the state of Madhya Pradesh on November 1, 1956, under the States Reorganisation Act. Today, the legacy of the Alipura state survives through its architectural marvel, the Alipura Palace. The palace, which showcases a beautiful blend of Bundelkhandi and Rajput architecture, has been meticulously restored by the descendants of the royal family and is operated as a heritage hotel, preserving the region's rich cultural and historical legacy.
