History
Origin and Lineage
The Thikana of Osian (historically known as Osiya or Ukeshpur) was a prominent vassal estate under the princely state of Jodhpur (Marwar). The ruling family of this fiefdom belongs to the Bhati clan of Rajputs, representing a junior branch of the Royal House of Jaisalmer. Tracing their ancestry to the Chandravanshi (Yaduwanshi) lineage of Lord Krishna, the Bhatis migrated eastward from the desert kingdom of Jaisalmer and established several estates across the Marwar region through strategic alliances and exemplary military service to the Rathore rulers.
Historical Evolution of Osian
Long before it became a Bhati Thikana, Osian was a renowned metropolitan and religious center between the 8th and 12th centuries. Under the patronage of the Gurjara-Pratihara dynasty, it flourished as a major trading hub on the trans-Thar caravan routes. It became celebrated for its brilliant temple architecture, featuring exquisite Hindu and Jain shrines such as the Sachiya Mata Temple and the Mahavira Temple. Over the centuries, as political dynamics shifted in Rajasthan, the region came under the direct sphere of influence of the Rathores of Marwar, who subsequently granted Osian as a Jagir (fiefdom) to the loyal Bhati nobles.
The Thikana Era and Administrative Role
Under the administrative hierarchy of the Marwar State, the Bhati Thakurs of Osian held a respected position among the nobility. They were bound by the feudal obligations of Rekh (tribute) and Chakri (military service) to the Maharaja of Jodhpur. The strategic position of Osian in the arid tracts of the Thar Desert required the Thikana's rulers to act as guardians of the trade routes and protectors of the local agrarian and mercantile communities. They also played an active role in maintaining the sanctity and security of the historic temples, ensuring they remained safe from external pillage during periods of political instability.
British Raj and Modern Transition
With the signing of the treaty of subsidiary alliance between Jodhpur State and the East India Company in 1818, the region entered a period of relative peace and stability. During this era, the rulers of Osian shifted their focus toward civic administration, revenue management, and preservation of local heritage. Following India’s independence in 1947, the Thikana of Osian was integrated into the newly formed state of Rajasthan. The enactment of the Rajasthan Land Reforms and Resumption of Jagirs Act of 1952 formally brought an end to the feudal privileges of the Thikana. Today, the descendants of the Osian Bhati family continue to preserve their ancestral heritage while the town of Osian has evolved into a premier archaeological and cultural tourism destination in Rajasthan.
