History

Origin and Foundation

The state of Darkoti, recognized as one of the smallest princely states in the Simla Hills, was reportedly founded in the 11th century by Raja Durga Singh, a Kachwaha Rajput who migrated to the region of Amber. Seeking to establish a sovereign pocket in the secure, rugged terrain of the outer Himalayas, the clan carved out a small principality. Despite its size, which spanned only about 4 to 5 square miles, the state maintained its distinct identity and sovereign lineage through centuries of regional political shifts.

The Gurkha Occupation and British Protectorate (1803–1815)

At the beginning of the 19th century, the expansionist Gurkha Empire of Nepal overran the Simla Hill States, including Darkoti. The ruling Rana and his subjects faced subjugation during this period of Gurkha dominance. Following the outbreak of the Anglo-Nepalese War (1814–1816), British forces under the command of General Sir David Ochterlony successfully expelled the Gurkhas from the hill territories in 1815.

With the expulsion of the Gurkhas, the British restored the local chieftains to their ancestral domains. The then Rana of Darkoti was formally confirmed in his possessions through a British Sanad (charter) in 1815. Due to the extremely limited resources and minuscule size of Darkoti, the state was exempted from paying any tribute to the British Crown, though it was bound to render military assistance and supply laborers for road construction when required. To maintain local order and guard the royal residence, the Rana maintained a modest military force consisting of just 10 infantrymen.

Modern Era and Post-Independence Merger

Throughout the British Raj, Darkoti remained under the political supervision of the Simla Hill States Superintendency. The Ranas of Darkoti, despite their limited jurisdiction, commanded respect among the regional hill chiefs and participated in regional councils.

Following the independence of India in 1947, the last ruling chief of Darkoti signed the Instrument of Accession to the Union of India. On April 15, 1948, the state was formally merged into the newly formed province of Himachal Pradesh, initially becoming a part of the Mahasu district. Today, the historical territory of Darkoti is integrated within the Shimla district of Himachal Pradesh, and the descendants of the royal house continue to preserve their historical lineage and cultural heritage.
