History
Mainpuri was a prominent and large estate (taluqdari) in the Doab region of Uttar Pradesh, historically held by the Chauhan Rajputs. This lineage is directly connected to the family of Emperor Prithviraj Chauhan III of Delhi and Ajmer. Following the fall of Delhi in 1192 CE, branches of the Chauhan clan migrated eastward from Rajasthan into the fertile Ganga-Yamuna Doab, eventually establishing their stronghold around Bhongaon and Mainpuri after displacing earlier local dominant groups.
For centuries, Mainpuri district remained one of the largest and most significant strongholds of the Chauhan Rajputs in northern India. Positioned between the major power centers of Delhi and Jaunpur, the region frequently became a battleground. The Chauhans of Mainpuri were historically noted for their highly rebellious nature; they repeatedly withheld tribute and revolted whenever the central power in Delhi weakened, leading to numerous punitive military expeditions sent against them by various Delhi Sultans.
During periods of intense regional conflict in the 14th and 15th centuries, the Mainpuri Chauhans frequently allied with neighboring Rajput powers—including the Bhadaurias of Bhadawar and the Tomars of Gwalior—to resist the expansionist policies of the Sultanates of Delhi, Malwa, and Kalpi.
The Chauhan family retained their status as the preeminent regional leaders and largest landowners up until the mid-19th century. During the Indian Rebellion of 1857, Raja Tej Singh of Mainpuri revolted against the British East India Company. Following his defeat, the British confiscated the estate's primary territories, though the family maintained local social prominence until the abolition of the zamindari system after Indian independence. Mainpuri, which was already administered as a district under the British United Provinces, became part of the renamed state of Uttar Pradesh in 1950.
