Origin and Ancestry

The Royal House of Kasmanda belongs to the prestigious Bais clan of Rajputs, historically one of the most dominant and influential ruling clans in the Oudh region. The dynasty traces its genealogical roots back to the legendary Emperor Shalivahana (Raja Salivahan), who established the Shaka Era in 78 AD after defeating Raja Vikramaditya of Ujjain. Over the centuries, branches of the Bais clan migrated northward from their traditional stronghold in Baiswara, eventually establishing their principal seat of power at Kasmanda in the present-day Sitapur district of Uttar Pradesh.

The Nawabi Era and Consolidation

During the rule of the Nawabs of Oudh State, the rulers of Kasmanda consolidated their territory through strategic alliances, military strength, and administrative efficiency. They established Kasmanda as one of the premier estates of the region, wielding significant socio-economic influence over local agrarian communities and maintaining a highly organized revenue system.

The British Raj and the Golden Era of Taluqdari

Following the annexation of Oudh by the British East India Company and the political settlement after the Uprising of 1857, the British administration restructured land ownership. Under the Oudh Estates Act, the Kasmanda estate was formally recognized as a premier Sanad-holding Taluqdari.

In the late 19^th century, the estate was headed by Raja Harihar Bakhsh Singh (born 1856, succeeded 1860), who was highly regarded for his progressive administration and philanthropy. His lineage and royal status are documented in Sir Roper Lethbridge's historical directory, The Golden Book of India.

The early 20^th century marked a period of cultural and architectural renaissance for the estate under Raja Bahadur Suraj Bakhsh Singh. A visionary builder, he commissioned several grand structures, including Kasmanda Palace in Sitapur, Kasmanda House in Dehradun, and the famous Kasmanda Castle in Mussoorie. He was a prominent member of the British Indian Association of Oudh and actively patronized regional education and healthcare initiatives.

Post-Independence and Modern Era

Following India's independence and the subsequent abolition of the Zamindari and Taluqdari systems in 1951, the Royal Family of Kasmanda successfully transitioned into modern civic and business life. They became pioneers in heritage preservation in Northern India.

Today, the family's legacy is preserved through their ancestral properties. The Kasmanda Castle in Mussoorie has been converted into a renowned heritage hotel, showcasing the Edwardian-era lifestyle of the Oudh aristocracy. The family continues to command great respect in Sitapur and Lucknow, remaining actively involved in philanthropy, education, and the preservation of Oudh's cultural heritage.
