History

Introduction and Foundation of Chanod Thikana

Chanod Thikana, situated in the modern-day Pali district of Rajasthan, was a premier noble estate (Thikana) of the erstwhile princely state of Marwar (Jodhpur). Founded in approximately 1708, the estate was ruled by the illustrious Mertia sub-clan of the Rathore dynasty. The Mertia Rathores trace their lineage back to Rao Duda, the son of Rao Jodha (the founder of Jodhpur) and the ruler of Merta.

The foundation of Chanod as an independent Thikana is attributed to Thakur Anop Singhji in the early 18th century. Under his leadership, the estate quickly grew in strategic and economic importance, securing its position as a prominent vassal state under the Maharajas of Jodhpur.

The Golden Era and Military Engagements

As a First Class Thikana, the rulers of Chanod enjoyed high-ranking protocols at the Jodhpur royal court, including the prestigious privileges of Double Tazim and Hath-Kurab. These honors signified the Maharaja's immense respect, allowing the Thakurs of Chanod to sit in close proximity to the sovereign during official durbars.

During the turbulent 18th and 19th centuries, the Mertia Rajputs of Chanod played crucial roles in defending the Marwar frontier. They provided military contingents to the Jodhpur state forces to counter invasions by the Mughal Empire, rival Rajput states, and the marauding Maratha confederacy. The Thakurs of Chanod were renowned for their chivalry, military tactics, and unwavering loyalty to the throne of Marwar.

British Period and Reforms

With the signing of the treaty of alliance between Jodhpur State and the British East India Company in 1818, a period of relative peace ensued. The Thakurs of Chanod shifted their focus from constant warfare to administrative reforms, agriculture, and civic welfare. They constructed several stepwells (baoris), temples, and water conservation structures to sustain the arid region’s agrarian economy.

The family resided in the majestic Chanod Garh, a fort palace that stands as a testament to classic Rajput architecture. Combining defensive fortifications with delicate stone carvings, jharokhas (hanging balconies), and grand courtyards, the palace became the cultural and administrative hub of the region.

Post-Independence and Modern Era

Following India's independence in 1947 and the subsequent integration of princely states, the Thikana of Chanod was merged into the Union of India, becoming part of the state of Rajasthan. With the abolition of the Jagirdari system, the administrative powers of the Thikana transitioned to democratic institutions.

Today, the descendants of the Chanod royal family actively preserve their ancestral heritage. The historic palace has been meticulously restored and converted into a renowned heritage hotel, Chanod Garh, offering travelers a glimpse into the regal lifestyle, history, and culture of the Mertia Rathores of Marwar.
