History
Origin and Foundation of Bhindar Jagir
The historic jagir of Bhindar (also known as Bhinder) holds an illustrious position in the annals of Mewar history. It was granted to Maharaj Shakti Singh, the younger son of Maharana Udai Singh II of Mewar and the younger brother of the legendary Maharana Pratap. Shakti Singh is the progenitor of the formidable Shaktawat sub-clan of the Sisodia Rajputs. According to historical traditions, the foundation of the Bhindar estate is deeply intertwined with the royal struggles of Mewar during the medieval era.
The most enduring legend associated with Shakti Singh occurred during the historic Battle of Haldighati in 1576. Despite earlier differences with his brother, Shakti Singh's familial loyalty triumphed when he witnessed Maharana Pratap being pursued by Mughal soldiers after the death of his faithful steed, Chetak. Shakti Singh slew the pursuers, offered his own horse to the Maharana, and reconciled with him. In recognition of his loyalty and valor, his descendants were granted prominent fiefdoms, with Bhindar becoming the seat of the premier Shaktawat estate in Mewar.
The Shaktawat Clan and the Mewar Court
Bhindar was recognized as one of the premier first-class nobles (the Solah Umraos or Sixteen Nobles) of the Udaipur court. The rulers of Bhindar held the hereditary title of "Maharaj" rather than "Rawat," which distinguished them among the Mewar nobility. The Shaktawat chiefs of Bhindar played a decisive role in the military campaigns of Mewar, defending the state against both imperial Mughal forces and rival factions.
Over the generations, the chiefs of Bhindar constructed the imposing Bhindar Castle, a magnificent fort-palace reflecting classic Rajput architectural styles. The estate comprised numerous villages, generating significant revenue and maintaining a standing army to support the Maharana during times of external aggression.
Mughal, Maratha, and British Periods
During the declining years of the Mughal Empire in the 18th century, Mewar faced severe financial and territorial distress due to frequent raids by the Marathas. Bhindar, along with other major Thikanas of Mewar, suffered from heavy exactions of chauth (tribute) levied by Holkar and Scindia forces. The internal rivalry between the Shaktawat clan (centered at Bhindar) and the Chundawat clan (centered at Salumber) often complicated the internal politics of the Udaipur court, sometimes escalating into armed clashes that required the Maharana’s intervention.
With the signing of the treaty of alliance between Mewar and the British East India Company in 1818, peace was gradually restored. Under British suzerainty, the administrative powers of the Maharaj of Bhindar were formalized within the state of Udaipur. The British period brought administrative stability, allowing the rulers of Bhindar to focus on civic reforms, agriculture, and local governance.
Post-Independence and Modern Era
Following India's independence in 1947, the state of Mewar (Udaipur) merged into the United State of Rajasthan, which later became the modern state of Rajasthan in 1956. Along with other princely states and jagirs, the administrative and revenue-collecting powers of the Bhindar Jagir were abolished under the Rajasthan Land Reforms and Resumption of Jagirs Act.
Today, the legacy of the Bhindar family is preserved through their heritage properties and cultural contributions. The historic Bhinder town remains a vibrant municipality in the Udaipur district, and members of the erstwhile royal family continue to engage in local development, preservation of regional heritage, and public service.
