History

The historical estate of Tana, a prominent thikana (fiefdom) of the Jhala Rajputs in Mewar (Udaipur), originated as a direct offshoot of the premier first-class noble house of Bari Sadri. The lineage of Tana traces back to the heroic Jhala clan, renowned in Rajput history for their supreme sacrifices and valor, most notably symbolized by Raj Rana Ajja Jhala who sacrificed his life while representing Maharana Sanga at the Battle of Khanwa in 1527. Granted to a younger branch of the Bari Sadri house, the nobles of Tana held a prestigious position among the second-class nobles of the princely state of Udaipur, actively participating in the military defense, administrative governance, and courtly affairs of Mewar. Throughout the Mughal and British periods, the rulers of Tana maintained their regional autonomy while remaining loyal vassals to the Maharanas of Udaipur, preserving their rich cultural heritage and martial traditions until the estate's integration into independent India.
