History
Origin and Dynasty
The history of Sanganwa is intimately linked with the Jadeja dynasty, a prominent Chandravanshi (Yaduvanshi) Rajput clan that historically dominated the Kathiawar peninsula of Gujarat. Sanganwa originated as a bhayati (brotherhood or cadet-branch) estate of the Gavridad Taluka (a Fifth Class state), which was itself an offshoot of the premier princely state of Rajkot. The rulers of these estates traced their ancestry back to the founders of Rajkot and, further back, to the royal house of Nawanagar.
The Giras Grant and Division
The estate of Sanganwa was established through the traditional Rajput system of Giras (patrimonial land grants given to younger sons for their maintenance). During the late 18th or early 19th century, Thakore Sahib Modji Patoji of Gavridad distributed his estate among his five sons. While the eldest son succeeded to the main gaddi of Gavridad, the younger brothers were collectively granted Sanganwa as their appanage. Following the demise of one of the brothers, Kumar Shri Ratansinhji Modji, who died without issue, his designated share was apportioned among the surviving brothers. Their descendants continued to hold undivided shares and local influence in the region as co-sharers (bháyáts).
British Rule and Administrative History
During the British Raj, the Sanganwa estate fell under the administrative purview of the Hallar prant (division) of the Kathiawar Agency, which was later reorganized into the Western India States Agency. Like many small holdings and non-jurisdictional talukas in Kathiawar, the Sanganwa estate owners paid tribute and exercised limited local revenue collection rights, while civil and criminal judicial powers were largely managed by the British Political Agent stationed at Rajkot. Detailed accounts of the complex shareholding systems of such small estates in Kathiawar are preserved in historical records like the Gazetteer of the Bombay Presidency (Volume VIII: Kathiawar).
Integration and Modern Era
Following India's independence in 1947, the talukdars of Sanganwa, along with other rulers of the Western India States Agency, signed the Instrument of Accession. The estate was integrated into the United State of Kathiawar (later known as Saurashtra State) in 1948 under the guidance of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. In 1956, Saurashtra was merged into the Bombay State, and subsequently became part of the newly created state of Gujarat in 1960. Today, the descendants of the Sanganwa branch maintain their historical legacy while being fully integrated into modern Indian civic and professional life.
