Origin and Foundation of Gavridad Taluk

Gavridad Taluk was established as a separate estate (appanage) under the rule of the Jadeja dynasty, a prominent Chandravanshi Rajput clan that held sway over several princely states in the Kathiawar region of Gujarat. The taluk’s origins are directly tied to the princely state of Rajkot. During the early 18^th century, Modji, the second son of Thakore Saheb Mehramanji II of Rajkot, was granted Gavridad along with five neighboring villages as his giras (feudal land appanage for sustenance).

Following this partition, the rulers of Gavridad, styled as Thakores, maintained close ties with their parent state of Rajkot while functioning as independent chiefs within their assigned territories. The lineage adhered strictly to Rajput traditions, carving out a distinct identity in the Halar Prant (division) of the Kathiawar peninsula. Administration and British Rule

Under the British Raj, Gavridad was classified as a Fifth Class State within the Western India States Agency (formerly the Kathiawar Agency). Despite its small geographical footprint, the Taluka exercised significant local administrative and judicial autonomy. The British administration structured the judicial powers of the Gavridad Thakore as follows:

• Criminal Jurisdiction: Power to sentence up to two years of rigorous imprisonment and impose fines of up to 2,000 Rupees.
• Civil Jurisdiction: Authority to adjudicate civil suits valued up to 5,000 Rupees.

To preserve law and order and assert its sovereignty, the State maintained a modest military and police presence. According to records from 1893, the Talukdar maintained a force consisting of 11 cavalrymen, 19 infantrymen, and 2 artillery guns. The state paid tribute (known as Peshkash or Zortalbi) to the British authorities and the Nawab of Junagadh, a common arrangement among the Kathiawar estates during this period. Succession and Governance

Governance in Gavridad was marked by the strict application of the rule of Primogeniture, ensuring that the eldest son succeeded to the gaddi (throne) to prevent further fragmentation of the state’s limited territory. This rule helped stabilize the administration through generations, preventing succession disputes that frequently weakened other smaller talukas in the region.

Post-Independence and Modern Era

Following the departure of the British from the Indian subcontinent in 1947, the last ruling Thakore of Gavridad signed the Instrument of Accession, merging the estate into the Dominion of India. In 1948, Gavridad became part of the United State of Kathiawar, which was later renamed the Saurashtra State. Following the States Reorganisation Act of 1956, Saurashtra was merged into the Bombay State, and subsequently, with the linguistic bifurcation of 1960, Gavridad became part of the Rajkot district in the modern state of Gujarat.

Today, the historical legacy of the Gavridad Taluk is preserved by the descendants of the Jadeja dynasty, while the village of Gavridad has transitioned into a developing semi-urban area, closely linked with the expanding metropolitan area of Rajkot city.
