Origin and Foundation of Rud Jagir
The Jagir of Rud is a historic estate belonging to the Shaktawat branch of the Sisodia Rajput dynasty. The thikana was established when it was granted as an appanage to Thakur Devi Singh, a younger son of Thakur Raj Singh Ji of the prominent state of Sawar. As descendants of Maharaj Shakti Singh (the brother of Maharana Pratap of Mewar), the rulers of Rud belong to the illustrious Shaktawat sub-clan, historically renowned for their valor, loyalty, and territorial administration in the Mewar and Ajmer-Merwara regions.
Historical Context and Administration
During the feudal era, Rud functioned as a cadet branch of the parent thikana of Sawar. The Jagirdars of Rud maintained local administrative control, managed agricultural revenues, and provided military contingents to the senior house of Sawar and the Maharana of Udaipur during campaigns. Throughout the turbulent periods of the 18th and 19th centuries—marked by Maratha interventions and the subsequent treaties with the British East India Company—the estate managed to preserve its traditional customs and land rights under the broader protective umbrella of the Rajputana Agency.
Post-Independence and Modern Era
Following India's independence in 1947 and the formation of the unified state of Rajasthan, the princely privileges and the jagirdari system were formally abolished under the Rajasthan Land Reforms and Resumption of Jagirs Act, 1952. The administrative authority of the Rud estate was transitioned to the democratic government of India. Today, the descendants of the thikana continue to preserve their cultural heritage, ancestral properties, and historic legacy.
