History

Origin and Clan Lineage

The Raipur Bichaur Taluk, situated in the Pratapgarh district of the historic Awadh (Oudh) region in Uttar Pradesh, was a prominent estate held by the Bachgoti clan of Rajputs. The Bachgotis are a distinguished branch of the Chauhan dynasty, claiming direct descent from the legendary Chahamana ruler, Prithviraj Chauhan III of Delhi. Following the fall of the Delhi Kingdom in the late 12th century, branches of the Chauhans migrated eastward into the fertile plains of the Gangetic valley, eventually establishing their dominance in the Sultanpur and Pratapgarh regions of modern-day Uttar Pradesh under the leadership of chieftains like Bariar Singh.

Foundation of Raipur Bichaur

The ancestor of the family was Diwan Hirda Singh of Patti Saifabad, whose younger son became the founder of Raipur Bichaur. This division of the ancestral estate occurred during the transition period of the Awadh subah, leading to the creation of Raipur Bichaur as an independent taluqa. The new branch established its seat of power, constructing fortresses and consolidating their hold over the surrounding agricultural tracts, asserting their local authority as influential chieftains (Diwans) of the region.

The Nawabi and British Eras

During the 18th and early 19th centuries, under the Nawabs of Awadh, the taluqdars of Raipur Bichaur maintained a high degree of autonomy. While they paid tribute to the court at Lucknow, they often functioned as independent lords within their territories, occasionally clashing with imperial tax collectors or neighboring clans like the Sombansis and Rajkumars. This era of decentralized power is documented in several regional surveys of the United Provinces.

Following the annexation of Oudh by the British East India Company in 1856 and the subsequent Indian Rebellion of 1857, the geopolitical landscape of the region underwent a massive transformation. After the British re-established control, they instituted the Taluqdari Settlement of Oudh to win the loyalty of influential local rulers. The Chief of Raipur Bichaur was recognized as a formal Taluqdar and was granted a Sanad (proprietary patent) by the British crown, securing their revenue and administrative rights over the estate. The taluqa was subsequently registered under the Oudh Estates Act of 1869, cementing their status among the elite landed aristocracy of the United Provinces of Agra and Oudh. Detailed accounts of these settlements can be found in the historical Gazetteer of the Province of Oudh.

Post-Independence and Modern Era

With India's independence in 1947, the traditional feudal structure underwent a radical transformation. The passage of the Uttar Pradesh Zamindari Abolition and Land Reforms Act in 1950 formally ended the taluqdari system, stripping the estate of its revenue-collection privileges. Despite the loss of their administrative estates, the descendants of the Raipur Bichaur family transitioned into modern democratic India. Members of the family turned their focus toward public service, agriculture, and education, maintaining their ancestral heritage and respect within the Pratapgarh district. Today, the legacy of the Bachgoti rulers of Raipur Bichaur is preserved in local folklore and historical studies of the Awadh aristocracy, as highlighted in comprehensive works such as Sir Roper Lethbridge's The Golden Book of India.
