History

Origin and Foundation

The Jagir of Mohkampura was established as an appanage (Thikana) under the princely state of Kushalgarh. The ruling lineage of Kushalgarh belongs to the Rathore clan of Rajputs, traceing their ancestry back to the royal house of Jodhpur. During the late 19th century, Rao Udai Singh (who ruled Kushalgarh from 1891 to 1916) granted the estate of Mohkampura to his younger son, Rajkumar Laxman Singh, as a patrimonial maintenance grant (traditionally termed as Haq-Bapat).

Administration and British Era

As a vassal estate of Kushalgarh, Mohkampura was deeply tied to the political fortunes of its parent state. Kushalgarh itself occupied a unique position in Rajputana, maintaining semi-independent status from Banswara State under the British Raj, with direct relations with the British Political Agent of the Mewar Residency. The Thakurs of Mohkampura were responsible for local revenue collection, maintaining law and order, and providing military assistance to the Rao of Kushalgarh when required. The historical details of the region's administration during this era are documented in the Imperial Gazetteer of India, which highlights the agrarian economy and feudal structure of the Vagad region.

Post-Independence and Modern Era

With the integration of Indian princely states after independence in 1947, Kushalgarh State merged into the United State of Rajasthan in April 1948. Subsequently, the jagirdari system was officially liquidated under the Rajasthan Land Reforms and Resumption of Jagirs Act, 1952. Consequently, the executive and revenue-collecting powers of the Mohkampura Jagir were transferred to the state government. Today, Mohkampura exists as a prominent village and local center within the Kushalgarh Tehsil of Banswara district, Rajasthan, where the descendants of the estate still reside and preserve their ancestral heritage.
