History
The Thikana of Bankora, situated in the erstwhile princely state of Dungarpur in present-day Rajasthan, represents one of the most illustrious and politically influential fiefdoms of the Chauhan clan in the Vagad region. Tracing their lineage back to the legendary Emperor Prithviraj III (Prithviraj Chauhan) of Delhi, the Thakurs of Bankora held the coveted status of Premier Tazimi Sardars (nobles of the first rank) and were historically recognized as the most powerful jagirdars under the Maharawals of Dungarpur. This estate was originally granted to them as a reward for their exceptional military valor and strategic counsel, positioning them at the helm of the state's feudal hierarchy. Throughout the Mughal, Maratha, and British periods, the chiefs of Bankora played a pivotal role in safeguarding the region's autonomy, managing state affairs, and maintaining administrative stability until the merger of Dungarpur State into the Union of India post-independence in 1948, as documented in historical accounts of the region's nobility such as the Imperial Gazetteer of India.
