History
Origin and Foundation of Lodhika
The Lodhika Junior Taluka, situated in the historic Halar region of Kathiawar (modern-day Gujarat), is an offshoot of the Rajkot State. The ruling lineage belongs to the illustrious Jadeja clan of Rajputs, who established several prominent principalities across the Kathiawar peninsula. The foundation of this specific branch dates back to the early 18th century, stemming from Thakur Saheb Mehramanji II of Rajkot. His seventh son, Kumar Shri Fulaji Mehramanji, received the estate of Khokhaddad along with other surrounding villages as his appanage (giras).
As generations progressed, the ancestral holdings underwent subdivision, a common practice among the Rajput bhayats (brotherhood or cadet branches). This process eventually led to the administrative bifurcation of the estate into two distinct jurisdictions: Lodhika Senior and Lodhika Junior. The Taluka of Lodhika Junior adhered strictly to the rule of primogeniture to govern the succession of its rulers.
British Period and Administrative Classification
During the British Raj, Lodhika Junior was integrated into the administrative framework of the Kathiawar Agency, which later became part of the Western India States Agency. Due to the fragmented nature of many Kathiawar estates, the British administration classified these states into classes based on their size, revenue, and historical importance to streamline judicial and administrative duties.
Lodhika Junior was designated as a Seventh Class State. Consequently, the jurisdictional powers of the Talukdar (ruler) of Lodhika Junior were restricted. The judicial powers of the Taluka were defined as follows:
- Criminal Jurisdiction: Power to award up to two years of rigorous imprisonment and impose fines up to 2,000 Rupees.
- Civil Jurisdiction: Authority to hear and decide cases involving values up to 5,000 Rupees.
Any legal matters exceeding these limits were referred to the British Political Agent’s court or the deputy assistant stationed at Rajkot. For more details on the historical administrative classifications of Kathiawar states, historians refer to the Gazetteer of the Bombay Presidency: Kathiawar (Volume VIII).
Post-Independence and Modern Era
Following India’s independence from British rule in August 1947, the ruler of Lodhika Junior, along with other princely states of the Kathiawar region, signed the Instrument of Accession to merge with the Dominion of India. In 1948, the taluka was integrated into the newly formed United State of Kathiawar, which was later renamed the Saurashtra State.
Under the States Reorganisation Act of 1956, Saurashtra was merged into the bilingual Bombay State. Following the division of Bombay State on linguistic lines in 1960, the region became part of the newly created state of Gujarat. Today, Lodhika functions as a taluka seat in the Rajkot district, preserving its rich cultural heritage while transitioning from a feudal Rajput estate into a modern administrative and agricultural hub.
