History

Origin and Foundation

The Lodhika Senior Taluka, situated in the historic region of Kathiawar (modern-day Saurashtra in Gujarat), represents an offshoot of the illustrious Jadeja Rajput clan. The origin of this taluka is closely intertwined with the ruling house of Rajkot. During the 18th century, Thakur Saheb Mehramanji II of Rajkot granted land appanages (locally known as giras) to his younger sons to ensure their sustenance and maintain administrative stability within the region.

The founder of the Lodhika Taluka was the sixth son of Mehramanji II of Rajkot, to whom the village of Bhichri and several other adjacent villages were initially granted as an appanage. Over time, the seat of this branch was established at Lodhika, leading to the formation of a distinct estate. To prevent the division and fragmentation of the estate among multiple heirs, succession within the Lodhika Senior Taluka was strictly governed by the rule of primogeniture, where the eldest son succeeded to the gaddi.

The British Period and Jurisdictional Status

With the expansion of British influence in the Kathiawar peninsula during the early 19th century, the British East India Company, and later the British Crown, sought to categorize and regulate the numerous principalities under the Kathiawar Agency. Under this administrative classification, Lodhika Senior was designated as a Seventh Class State.

As a Seventh Class State, the jurisdictional powers of the Taluka were limited and strictly defined by the British political agency. The judicial powers of the ruling Talukdar were restricted to:

  • Criminal Jurisdiction: Power to award up to two years of rigorous imprisonment and impose fines up to 2,000 Rupees.
  • Civil Jurisdiction: Authority to hear and decide civil cases to the extent of 5,000 Rupees.

Any legal matters exceeding these limits were referred to the British political agent's court. Despite these limitations, the rulers of Lodhika Senior maintained local order, collected land revenues, and managed the internal administration of their villages with a high degree of autonomy.

Post-Independence and Modern Era

Following the end of British rule and the partition of India in 1947, the ruler of Lodhika Senior, along with other princely states of Kathiawar, signed the Instrument of Accession to join the Dominion of India. In February 1948, the taluka merged into the United State of Kathiawar, which was later renamed Saurashtra State.

With the reorganization of states in 1956, the territory became part of the bilingual Bombay State, and eventually, in 1960, it was integrated into the newly created state of Gujarat. Today, Lodhika functions as a taluka headquarters within the Rajkot district of Gujarat, retaining its historical legacy as a former Jadeja Rajput principality.
