History

Origin and Foundation of Isarda Thikana

Isarda was one of the most prominent and premier Thikanas (noble estates) of the erstwhile Jaipur State. Located in the present-day Sawai Madhopur district of Rajasthan, the estate was ruled by the Rajawat sub-clan of the Kachwaha Rajput dynasty. The lineage of Isarda traces its descent from Maharaja Prithvi Raj (r. 1503–1527) of Amber. The estate was granted as a fief to the descendants of the ruling family, who played a crucial role in the military and administrative affairs of the Jaipur State.

Strategically situated near the Banas River, Isarda was fortified to secure the southern frontier of the Jaipur State. The grand Isarda Fort, with its massive stone walls, deep moats, and ornate palaces, stands as a testimony to the architectural and military prowess of the Rajawat nobles during the medieval era.

The Golden Period: The Cradle of Jaipur's Sovereigns

Isarda holds a unique and highly prestigious position in the history of the Kachwaha dynasty. Due to the lack of direct male heirs in the main ruling line of Jaipur in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Isarda twice provided successors to the gaddi (throne) of the Jaipur Kingdom, shaping the destiny of the entire state.

  • Maharaja Sawai Madho Singh II (r. 1880–1922): Born as Kaim Singh, the second son of Thakur Shambhu Singh of Isarda, he was adopted by Maharaja Sawai Ram Singh II of Jaipur on his deathbed in 1880. Under his long and prosperous reign, Jaipur witnessed tremendous modernization, including the expansion of railways, public health initiatives, and the construction of the famous Albert Hall Museum. More information about his reign can be found on his Wikipedia Profile.
  • Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II (r. 1922–1949): Born as Mor Mukut Singh, the son of Thakur Sawai Singh of Isarda, he was adopted by Maharaja Sawai Madho Singh II in 1921. He succeeded to the throne of Jaipur as Sawai Man Singh II and became one of India’s most celebrated modern rulers, an international polo player, and later a distinguished diplomat. His life is detailed in the Wikipedia Biography of Man Singh II.

The British Period and Administrative Eminence

During the period of the British Raj, the Thakurs of Isarda enjoyed close relations with the British Residency and the Jaipur Durbar. Because of their close kinship ties with the ruling family of Jaipur, the Thakurs of Isarda held the highest seat of honor among the nobles of Jaipur state, known as the Tazimi Sirdars. They possessed administrative, judicial, and revenue collection powers within their territory, maintaining peace and fostering local trade and agriculture along the Banas river basin.

Post-Independence and Modern Era

Following India's independence in 1947 and the subsequent integration of princely states into the United State of Rajasthan, Isarda was merged into the democratic framework of India. The jagirdari system was abolished with the Rajasthan Land Reforms and Resumption of Jagirs Act, 1952.

In the modern era, Isarda remains famous for the massive Isarda Dam Project built on the Banas River, which serves as a vital drinking water and irrigation source for the Sawai Madhopur and Tonk districts. The historical Isarda Fort remains a major local landmark, reflecting the rich heritage, chivalry, and historical legacy of the Rajawat clan of the Kachwaha dynasty.
