History

Motishri, a minor taluka (estate) situated in the historic Saurashtra peninsula of Gujarat, was ruled by the Suryavanshi Gohil Rajput clan, who traced their illustrious lineage back to the rulers of Mewar before establishing their power in Kathiawar under the leadership of Sejakji in the 13th century. During the colonial era, this small estate was classified as a non-salute princely state under the Gohelwar division, eventually falling under the administrative supervision of the Western India States Agency. The Talukdars of Motishri exercised limited judicial and revenue-collecting authority within their jurisdiction, paying tribute to larger regional powers and the British Crown until India's independence in 1947, when the estate merged into the United State of Saurashtra through the Instrument of Accession and was subsequently integrated into the modern state of Gujarat.
