Gajendragad

The historical estate of Gajendragad, situated in the modern-day Gadag district of Karnataka, was founded by Shri Valabhasinh Cholaraj Ghorpade, the second son of Raja Cholaraj Ghorpade of the prominent Maratha clan of Mudhol. Strategically positioned around the iconic Gajendragad Fort—which was fortified by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj during his southern campaign in the late 17^th century—the estate played a vital role in the regional Maratha administration and Deccan geopolitics. Over the centuries, the Ghorpade rulers of Gajendragad maintained their military significance through turbulent periods of Maratha, Mughal, and Mysore conflicts. Following the British expansion into the Deccan, the estate was formally recognized by the British Government as a Saranjam (political land grant). Although the Bombay High Court initially declared the estate to be partible in 1868, a rigorous re-examination of its historical status led to a landmark Government Resolution in 1891, which officially decreed that the entirety of the Gajendragad estate was an indivisible, hereditary Saranjam continuable in the Ghorpade lineage in the fullest sense of the word until its eventual integration into the Indian Union post-Independence in 1948.
