History

Foundation and History

The estate of Dhariawad was founded in the mid-16th century by Kunwar Sahasmal, the second son of the legendary warrior ruler Maharana Pratap Singh of Mewar. As descendants of Kunwar Sahasmal, the rulers of this estate belong to the Ranawat sub-clan of the Sisodia Rajputs. Strategically situated amidst the dense forests and rugged foothills of the Aravalli Range, Dhariawad served as a vital frontier thikana (noble estate) protecting the southern borders of Mewar from Maratha and Mughal incursions. Throughout the historical fluctuations of the region, the Rawats of Dhariawad remained loyal feudatories to the Durbar of Udaipur, contributing military strength and administrative counsel to the state.

Post-Independence and Modern Era

Following India's independence and the subsequent integration of princely states, Dhariawad was merged into the state of Rajasthan. Today, it is a town and tehsil headquarters within the Pratapgarh district of Rajasthan. The architectural legacy of the thikana is preserved in the historic Dhariawad Fort, which has been converted into a heritage hotel to promote regional tourism and preserve the cultural heritage of the Sisodia dynasty. More information on the administrative transitions of the region can be explored through the official Pratapgarh District Portal.
