History
Origin and Foundation of Nimbaj Thikana
Nimbaj (also spelled Nimaj) was a premier feudal estate (Thikana) within the erstwhile princely state of Sirohi. It belonged to the Deora clan of the Chauhan Rajputs and was founded by a scion of the Sirohi royal family. Due to its close kinship with the ruling house, Nimbaj held an exceptionally prestigious position in the state's feudal hierarchy. It ranked second in precedence among the major nobles (Sardars) of Sirohi, positioned right after the Thakur of Padiv. The Thakurs of Nimbaj were classified as first-class nobles, exercising significant political, military, and administrative influence within the state.
Historical Significance and the British Period
Throughout its history, the Deora Chauhans of Nimbaj served as key military pillars for the Maharaos of Sirohi, defending the realm against external invasions from neighboring Marwar and Mewar, as well as assisting in quelling internal rebellions. Following the treaty of alliance between Sirohi and the British East India Company in 1823, the position of the premier jagirdars was formally recognized. As documented in the Imperial Gazetteer of India, Nimbaj was designated as one of the principal estates whose thakurs maintained local law and order, collected revenue, and rendered customary services to the Sirohi State durbar.
Post-Independence and Modern Era
Following India's independence in 1947, the princely state of Sirohi was merged into the Indian Union, eventually becoming a part of the state of Rajasthan. With the passage of the Rajasthan Land Reforms and Resumption of Jagirs Act of 1952, the traditional jagirdari system was formally abolished. The feudal privileges of the Nimbaj estate came to an end, and its agricultural lands and administrative duties were integrated into the democratic framework of modern India. Today, the descendants of the Nimbaj Thikana continue to preserve their historical legacy and cultural heritage.
