History
History of Delath Princely State
Delath was a minor princely state situated in the Shimla Hills of present-day Himachal Pradesh, India. Classified as one of the Shimla Hill States, it was historically a tributary to the larger state of Bashahr. The state was founded around the eleventh century by Rana Prithi Singh, the younger brother of Rana Kirat Singh, who founded the neighboring state of Kumharsain. The ruling dynasty of Delath belonged to the Suryavanshi clan of Rajputs, who traced their ancestry to migrations from Gaya in Bihar to escape foreign invasions in northern India.
Geographical and Political Status
The territory of Delath was strategically situated on the left bank of the Satluj River. It was a small principality, covering a modest mountainous area with a limited population. Due to its size and geopolitical vulnerability, Delath was historically nested under the political influence of its larger neighbors, primarily Bashahr. The Ranas of Delath paid an annual tribute (known as tika or nazarana) to the Raja of Bashahr, which cemented their vassal status while allowing them to maintain internal administrative autonomy within their territory.
The Gurkha Invasion and British Era
At the beginning of the 19th century, Delath, along with other Shimla Hill States, fell victim to the aggressive expansion of the Gurkha Empire from Nepal. Under the leadership of General Amar Singh Thapa, Gurkha forces occupied the region from 1803 to 1815, causing widespread displacement and instability. The ruling family of Delath was forced to submit to Gurkha dominance during this turbulent period.
The Gurkha hegemony was brought to an end by the British East India Company during the Anglo-Nepalese War (1814–1816). Following the expulsion of the Gurkhas, the British restored the native rulers to their ancestral lands under the terms of the Treaty of Sugauli. The British administration formally recognized the traditional suzerainty of Bashahr over Delath. A Sanad (charter) confirmed this arrangement, requiring the Rana of Delath to pay an annual tribute of 150 Rupees to the Raja of Bashahr under British oversight. The political affairs of the state were supervised by the British Superintendent of the Hill States at Shimla.
Post-Independence and Modern Era
Following the end of British rule and the independence of India in August 1947, the Delath State acceded to the newly formed Dominion of India. On April 15, 1948, Delath, along with nearly thirty other Shimla Hill States, signed the instrument of merger to form the centrally administered province of Himachal Pradesh. Today, the territory of the erstwhile Delath state forms part of the Shimla district in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh.
