History

The Deara (also known as Dera or Diyara) Taluk, situated in the Sultanpur district of Uttar Pradesh, was a premier estate ruled by the Bachgoti clan of Rajputs, who claim direct descent from the lineage of the legendary Chauhan Emperor Prithviraj Chauhan III of Delhi. Founded by Rajkumar Bariar Singh, a descendant of Chahir Deo (the brother of Prithviraj Chauhan) who migrated to the Awadh region in the late 13th century, the family consolidated their authority over the fertile plains of the Gomti River to become one of the most powerful taluqdars in Oudh. During the Indian Rebellion of 1857, the estate's chieftain, Raja Rustam Sah, played a pivotal role in regional geopolitics by initially providing refuge to British officers and later maintaining his sovereign influence, which earned the family hereditary recognition and expansive land grants under the British Raj's Oudh Estates Act. The socio-political prominence and administrative legacy of the Bachgoti Rajas of Deara are extensively chronicled in colonial records, including the Sultanpur District Gazetteer, underscoring their historical dominance in eastern Awadh until the post-independence abolition of the zamindari system.
