History
Origin and Foundation
The history of the Dattigaon Jagir is deeply intertwined with the Rathore dynasty of Malwa, particularly the parent state of Amjhera. The jagir was founded in 1715 when it was granted in appanage to Maharaj Chiman Singh, the second son of Rao Jasrup of Amjhera. This grant established Dattigaon as an important feudal estate (Thikana) within the geopolitical landscape of southwestern Madhya Pradesh.
The rulers of Dattigaon belong to the Rathore clan of Rajputs, tracing their ancestry back to the royal house of Marwar (Jodhpur). During the late Mughal era, Rathore chieftains established several principalities in the fertile Malwa region, asserting their influence and guarding strategic routes.
The Maratha and British Periods
With the decline of the Mughal Empire in the 18th century, the Malwa region witnessed the expansion of the Maratha Empire. The Pawars of Dhar, the Scindias of Gwalior, and the Holkars of Indore carved out their respective territories. During this transition, Dattigaon and its parent state, Amjhera, navigated complex tributary alliances with these rising Maratha powers.
Following the Third Anglo-Maratha War and the subsequent establishment of British suzerainty in the region, the British East India Company supervised the local states through the Central India Agency. Dattigaon's status as a subordinate jagir was maintained under this administrative umbrella, preserving its internal autonomy and traditional customs.
The 1857 Uprising and Territorial Shifts
The Indian Rebellion of 1857 brought monumental changes to the region. Rao Bakhtawar Singh of Amjhera led a fierce revolt against the British forces in Malwa. Following his capture and execution in 1858, the principality of Amjhera was confiscated by the British authorities. The territory of Amjhera, along with its various tributary estates and appanages, was subsequently transferred to the administration of the Dhar State. Despite these political upheavals, the thikana of Dattigaon managed to retain its local landholdings and traditional socio-cultural position among the regional aristocracy.
Post-Independence and Modern Era
Following India's independence in 1947, the princely states and estates of Central India signed the Instrument of Accession. In 1948, Dattigaon, as part of the Dhar State territories, was integrated into the newly formed state of Madhya Bharat, which was later merged into Madhya Pradesh in 1956. Following the abolition of the feudal Jagirdari system, the descendants of the Dattigaon family transitioned into citizens of democratic India while continuing to preserve their ancestral heritage, historical records, and traditional patronage of local festivals.
